As a movie critic who has seen more action films than I care to remember, I must say that the Fast and Furious franchise has consistently proven its mettle over the years. With each installment, the series seems to reinvent itself while staying true to its core values – family, loyalty, and high-octane thrills.
As the holiday season draws near, discussions frequently center around family, and when it comes to Hollywood, few franchises embody the essence of family as strongly as The Fast and the Furious. Since 2001, this series has consistently demonstrated that bloodlines aren’t necessary for belonging in Dom’s circle, and in the case of Jason Statham‘s character Deckard Shaw, even a fierce adversary can find a place at the Toretto table if they earn it. Statham initially joined the series in 2013’s Fast & Furious 6, and has been a recurring figure since then, with his most recent appearance in last year’s Fast X. Starting this month, you can stream Fast X at a new location.
On November 15th, “Fast X” will shift its streaming location from Amazon Prime Video to Peacock, where it initially premiered back in September 2023. Directed by Louis Leterrier, this film was produced with a budget of $378 million and generated $715 million at the box office during its theatrical release, placing it as the sixth highest-grossing entry so far. In terms of the chronology, “Fast X” follows directly after “F9” and is the 11th main installment in the series if you count the spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw”.
Two years following the events of F9, I find myself eagerly anticipating Fast X, where my old friend Dominic Toretto’s past comes knocking in the form of Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), seeking vengeance for the death of his father, Hernan, who met his end at the hands of Hobbs back in 2011’s Fast Five. As tensions rise and the crew fractures, a few members embark on a journey to London in search of Shaw’s assistance in their battle against Reyes. Before they go, Dom and Han (Sung Kang) take a moment to address some lingering issues between them.
Will Jason Statham Return for Fast X – Part 2?
The connection between the Shaw and Toretto clans is intricate, without a doubt. In the movie Fast & Furious 6, it’s disclosed that Deckard was the one who apparently killed Han in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Later, after Dom put his brother Owen into a coma, he seeks retribution in Furious 7, even going as far as to destroy the Toretto residence. This complex narrative timeline makes sense if you’ve been following the series, but in essence, films four, five, and six occur before the Tokyo Drift events until they intertwine in the post-credits scene of Part 6. It can be confusing, we understand.
After resolving their disputes, Deckard and Dom united to battle a mutual foe named Cipher. This alliance ultimately led to Shaw saving Dom’s son, thereby earning him a spot at the Toretto family table. As previously mentioned, blood is not always necessary for forming a family. Naturally, this raises the question: will Jason Statham reprise his role as Deckard Shaw in Fast X – Part 2, which is rumored to be the final installment of the main franchise?
It’s not yet confirmed by Universal, but indications suggest that Statham will indeed return for the next installment. However, it’s unclear what role he’ll play this time around. Interestingly, he had a brief appearance in F9 before his return in Fast X, following his significant roles in parts seven and eight. With the plot details being secretive, the specific part Shaw will play in the final chapter is still shrouded in mystery. But we’ll keep you updated as filming begins sometime in 2025.
