As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who grew up on X-Men comics and has watched every iteration of Storm since “X-Men ’97,” I can confidently say that Season 3 of “What If…?” is shaping up to be the most exciting yet! The arrival of Storm, wielding Mjolnir, is a dream come true for fans like me. I remember when she first donned the armor back in the comics and now seeing her do it on screen is just mind-blowing!
A fresh trailer for Marvel Animation’s “What If…?” series has been released, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to undergo a significant transformation. The long-awaited merger between MCU and X-Men universe has finally happened with the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” With Marvel’s beloved mutants now in play, anything can happen during the third and final season of this animated series. The appearance of one character in particular underscores this possibility – it’s true! Just as rumored, Storm, leader of the X-Men, has officially entered the MCU, brandishing Thor’s legendary hammer, Mjolnir. If you weren’t already thrilled about Season 3, this final sneak peek might have convinced you otherwise.
In the trailer, Storm (voiced again by Alison Sealy-Smith from “X-Men ’97”) isn’t featured much, and she only appears at the very end following the “What If…?” title card. However, what we do catch a glimpse of – Storm wielding lightning through Mjolnir – is an exciting moment for Marvel Comics fans everywhere. As she declares, “I am Storm, the Goddess of Thunder,” before striking her tentacled adversary emerging from a rift in the multiverse, it seems like a wish come true. If you were left puzzled by the absence of specific Thor (Chris Hemsworth) versions in the trailer, this final sequence provides the explanation.
Based on Marvel Animation’s exceptional work on “X-Men ’97,” it’s reasonable to anticipate they will treat Ororo Munroe (delve into Storm’s comprehensive background here) with equal care. With Sealy-Smith returning to her role, the character is in capable and talented hands.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the X-Men’s Storm become a Thor
Is it exciting to see Storm taking over as Thor in “What If…?” but I can’t help but wonder if this storyline has any significant roots in the original comic books? After all, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) became Captain America because he was already established as Cap in the comics. Similarly, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) assumed the role of Thor due to her character’s development within Marvel’s comic book world. However, Storm wielding Mjolnir is a bit different. While it’s true that she has lifted Thor’s hammer in the past, this was an exception rather than the norm, and it remains to be seen how closely this adaptation sticks to the original source material.
In the “X-Men Annual” #9 from 1985, Storm found herself deceived by Loki into using a hammer he had created called Stormcaster. At this point, her powers were gone, and she desperately tried to regain them. The Stormcaster worked perfectly, enabling her to resume her heroic role once more. However, as she later discovered, Loki was manipulating her, and the powers came with a heavy cost. With Thor’s assistance, she ultimately destroyed Stormcaster using Mjolnir, but there was confusion over whether it was Storm or Thor who wielded the hammer during this act. The question lingered until 2023 when we finally learned the truth about who truly controlled Mjolnir during the destruction of Stormcaster.
In issue #4 of “Immortal Thor”, it is revealed that Storm was the one who wielded Thor’s enchanted hammer, Mjolnir. Since she has been deemed worthy, she can do so again. Whenever she lifts the hammer, she transforms into a character resembling Thor, emphasizing her power as the Goddess of Thunder. This comic book twist paves the way for an intriguing “What If…?” scenario and leaves fans eagerly anticipating Storm’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The What If…? Season 3 trailer’s Thor isn’t the only electrifying reveal
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m absolutely hyped about more than just Storm stepping up as Thor in “What If…?” Season 3! The trailer unveils some thrilling surprises, like Howard the Duck (Seth Green) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) joining forces, the reappearance of the white Vision from “WandaVision,” and an adventure into the MCU’s Wild West. Can’t wait to see what else they’ve got in store!
One particularly thrilling aspect is the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”-esque scene where Sam Wilson, as Captain America, joins forces with his team of Avengers, merging into a colossal robot reminiscent of MegaZord to combat their towering adversaries. Truly a moment straight out of a fantasy.
As a die-hard fan, I eagerly anticipate the final season of “What If…?” – “One Last Gaze” as the tagline hints. The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) and his multiversal Avengers team are undoubtedly going to face their toughest challenges yet, and I can only imagine the incredible twists and turns that Marvel has in store for us. I can hardly wait to unravel the mysteries of this season!
