As a long-time fan of Michael Connelly’s work and having spent countless hours immersed in the gritty streets of Los Angeles through the tales of Haller and Bosch, I must admit that the news of their onscreen separation left me somewhat crestfallen. Much like the bitter taste of black coffee on a hot day, the thought of these two titans of justice never crossing paths feels like an injustice itself.
Screenwriter, executive producer, and co-showrunner for the series The Lincoln Lawyer, Dailyn Rodriguez, has confirmed our suspicions, albeit reluctantly. Characters Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch, although inhabiting the same fictional universe (the novels of Michael Connelly), will not cross paths on screen. Intriguingly, they are half-brothers, both sharing the same father, J. Michael Haller, and working in Los Angeles, one as a detective, the other as a defense attorney. Given their familial ties and shared professional city, it seems logical that their paths would intersect, but Rodriguez clarified to MovieWeb that currently, there’s no feasible way for a crossover between the two storylines.
She went on to detail the more behind-the-scenes IP reasons for this:
“Basically, Netflix and Amazon each have their own unique productions, and it can be disappointing when you’re a fan of both. Our interpretation of Mickey Haller might be slightly less intense than the books, but we could potentially incorporate Bosch, the character from Amazon’s show, into our storyline. However, these shows are distinct entities.
So far, Rodriguez notes that the creative team has managed to meet plot and story demands from the source books without necessitating a crossover. He suggests that their approach has been effective by developing existing characters such as Cisco and Izzy more extensively. However, when Bosch becomes more deeply ingrained in the original material, Rodriguez hints at: “We’ll need to find innovative ways to incorporate him without disrupting our established narrative.
In books similar to “Resurrection Walk,” where Bosch plays a significant role, we can devise a substitute character to step in when necessary, ensuring that the storyline remains engaging and fulfilling for readers.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Will Bring Back Maggie in a Big Way
Although Rodriguez didn’t include Bosch in “The Lincoln Lawyer”, he did share some insights about the potential future of another cherished character, Maggie.
In the third season, she didn’t play a significant role because she wasn’t important in the book, which meant there was limited material for us to work with. However, if you’re familiar with “The Law of Innocence,” the storyline for the fourth season, her character becomes more prominent.
It appears that the storyline for “The Lincoln Lawyer” and its character Mickey Haller is in capable hands, as popular elements are coming back and growing, even without Bosch appearing in future installments – at least, not for now.
