Dancing With The Stars' Instant Dance Challenge Was A Bold Idea, But I Wasn't A Fan For A Couple Of Reasons

As a seasoned gamer of the dance floor and a dedicated fan of Dancing With The Stars for over a decade, I must say that the Instant Dance Challenge during its 500th episode left me more bewildered than a cha-cha with no rhythm. While I commend the producers for taking a daring leap, this live challenge felt like a waltz gone wrong.

The 500th episode of “Dancing With The Stars” had numerous memorable moments, but there was one aspect that I could have skipped over. Previously, before the grand night, I felt anxious about the planned Instant Dance Challenge, and even contestants like Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong shared my concerns as there were many uncertainties involved. I had hoped for the best, thinking it would be engaging enough to become a recurring feature in the series, but unfortunately, I was underwhelmed by the outcome.

I appreciate “Dancing With The Stars” for making a daring move and attempting something unique to honor its extended existence, and I can understand why the creators believed a live challenge would intensify the evening. Nevertheless, I feel it lost its impact for several reasons, and I don’t believe it should continue as part of the contest in the future.

What Was The Instant Dance Challenge?

Let’s get started! For those who might need a reminder, the Instant Dance Challenge was a part of Dancing With The Stars. During this segment, contestants discovered the dance style and song they’d be dancing to just moments before performing live on stage. Upon hearing the song, they dashed to their dressing rooms to swap costumes. They could utilize the commercial break and preview package prior to the dance to fine-tune their moves and make any necessary last-minute adjustments, as the challenge proper would only begin then.

The Dancing Was Incredibly Sloppy

Concerned about potential dance quality problems, and as anticipated, several moves performed during this contest were clumsy. Given that the top dancers from DWTS Season 33 have barely been dancing ballroom for two months, it’s understandable and I don’t blame them for any shortcomings.

Each contestant hadn’t already mastered these famous dances, instead they spent the previous week learning only the essential steps. As a result, their performances were quite fundamental or relied heavily on tricks. Fortunately, Stephen Nedoroscik avoided using his pommel horse this time, so I can still appreciate that.

I enjoy watching “Dancing With The Stars” mainly because of the high-quality dancing, particularly during the later stages of the season. However, my excitement fades when talented dancers like Ilona Maher, who performed exceptionally well earlier, stumble and make significant mistakes in their improvised dance. It’s not entertaining for me. I prefer watching these novice dancers perform at their peak after proper preparation.

The Judges Seemed Apprehensive To Give Low Scores

It wasn’t just that the dancing appeared messy, but it seemed as though the judges on “Dancing With The Stars” were reluctant to give low scores despite obvious errors. The night’s most questionable moment was when Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong received a perfect score for their performance, which they acknowledged later didn’t contain enough choreographed moves. It’s hard to understand how an incomplete dance could earn a perfect score. The lowest score given during this round was 22 out of 30 points, and I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that many of these dances deserved much lower scores than that.

In simpler terms, the conclusion I can draw is that the night concluded as anticipated by most “Dancing With The Stars” viewers. After some spectators believed they should have departed following the Halloween episode, luck finally ran out for Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach during the 500th episode. If it had been another pair, I might have had more issues with this challenge, but I can say it was a reasonable attempt to innovate. However, I would be content if it’s never tried again in the future.
