As a die-hard DC fan who’s been through the highs and lows of the DCEU, I can confidently say that the arrival of Blue Beetle was a breath of fresh air. Xolo Maridueña’s portrayal of Jaime Reyes in the 2023 film was not just entertaining but also heartwarming. I remember watching it during its theatrical run, and despite some minor hiccups, it felt like a step in the right direction for DC Studios.

As a die-hard movie buff, I must say one of the shining moments in the DC cinematic universe for me was the 2023 release of “Blue Beetle”. This film marked the debut of Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, and it turned out to be a pivotal piece even though changes were brewing in the DC Universe following the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs. To our delight, “Blue Beetle” was confirmed to be part of this new direction for the DC Universe, with Xolo set to reprise his superhero role. The future of this character is still being shaped, but I, along with many fans, can’t wait to see where Xolo takes Jaime Reyes next on his heroic journey.

During a chat with Hablemos de Cine, Maridueña shared his feelings about carrying on from where he left off in the 2023 Blue Beetle film and the upcoming animated series produced by DC Studios. He expressed:

I’m thrilled to carry on the tale of Jamie as Blue Beetle; it’s a privilege! I can hardly contain my excitement to find out where his journey takes him. At this point, it’s still early days, but I have a feeling it’s going to be the wildest anime adventure yet!

Earlier this year, the news broke about the upcoming “Blue Beetle” series, which is being developed by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. Miguel Pera takes charge as both director and showrunner, with Cristian Martinez handling the writing duties. Previous contributors to the 2023 movie, such as Angel Manual Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, will serve as executive producers alongside John Rikard. Galen Vaisman, who previously worked on the film as an executive producer, will now supervise the animated project for DC Studios. The team appears to be a blend of fresh talent and key creatives who played a significant role in bringing Blue Beetle to the big screen.

In the 14th movie of the DC Extended Universe, we find Blue Beetle featuring Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who stumbles upon the armor that grants him extraordinary powers following his unintentional selection by an extraterrestrial artifact known as the Scarab.

The movie eventually garnered positive reviews, with a score of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was particularly applauded for Maridueña’s depiction of the main character and the acting talents of its lead cast. In addition to Maridueña, the film features Adrianna Barraza, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, Damián Alcázar, and George Lopez.

Despite earning critical acclaim, the film “Blue Beetle” struggled financially, generating $131 million worldwide against a production budget of around $103-125 million. The movie’s poor box office performance was largely attributed to the SAG and WGA strikes, which hindered its stars from effective promotion and the early announcement of the DCEU reboot into the DC Universe (DCU), overshadowing the film before its release. However, upon its debut on Max, “Blue Beetle” became the most-streamed movie on the platform, eventually finding success in streaming.
