Ahead Of Chicago Fire's Fall Finale, David Eigenberg Shares What Never Occurred To Him About Herrmann And Sticking To The Script

As a seasoned gamer of the world of TV shows, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns – but none quite like the rollercoaster that is Chicago Fire. With the fall finale just around the corner, it seems like the stakes are higher than ever, especially with the unexpected arrival of Chief Pascal shaking up the firehouse dynamics.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 7 of Chicago Fire Season 13, called “Untouchable.”

Surprisingly enough, the 2024 TV schedule run of Chicago Fire is drawing to a close, as the Season 13 fall finale is scheduled for November 20. The final episode promises to be packed with excitement, featuring plotlines such as Severide and Pascal teaming up, the continuing tale of star-crossed lovers Violet and Carver, and Herrmann and Mouch preparing for their officer exams. In a recent conversation with David Eigenberg about Herrmann’s pursuit of a promotion within the CFD, he revealed something that had never crossed his mind… or Herrmann’s.

Fans might recall from the Season 12 finale (now streaming with a Peacock subscription), Boden’s emotional farewell to Firehouse 51 was marked by naming Herrmann as his chosen successor as Chief. However, Season 13 introduced Dermot Mulroney as Chief Pascal, who appears content in his new role at Firehouse 51. Despite this, Herrmann continues to prepare for the captain’s exam, a necessary step towards becoming Chief himself.

In my excitement while attending the TopMob’s interview with David Eigenberg during NBC’s One Chicago press junket, I couldn’t help but wonder if Herrmann had ever considered this leadership journey had Boden not proposed it. The charismatic actor from long-running Chicago Fire series chuckled and shared:

In the genuine realm of firefighters, there are firefighters and supervisors or officers. Once you advance to the rank of lieutenant, you remain a firefighter, but you’re no longer referred to as one. The question might be, ‘Are you a firefighter or an officer?’ To which Herrmann would respond, ‘I’m a firefighter.’ He was proud of that title. However, they introduced a new concept, and I think it has been beneficial… I’m not sure what the future holds, and I’m unsure if they are either.

It appears that no definitive choice has been made regarding Herrmann’s potential role as the next Chief of 51 in the near future. With plenty of Season 13 left and the 2025 TV schedule looming, I was curious to know if David Eigenberg, the actor, had ever contemplated this possibility given that Eamonn Walker held such a significant role within the cast for an extended period. Upon asking about his thoughts on the subject, Eigenberg shared a heartwarming account of their real-life friendship with Walker:

No, I didn’t. Eamonn is a dear [friend]. He actually has been visiting me, and he just went out of town to go see his son. But I’m in the basement, and he’s been staying right over there. I’m very close to Eamonn, and I love him dearly. I’ve sat in the desk a few times, in Boden’s desk… And I honestly don’t know what they’re going to do. Dermot has been a wonderful addition to the cast and to the show. He’s an adorable, loving man, and he’s a very interesting actor, so they’re going to play it out how it goes.

Although Eigenberg spoke positively about Dermot Mulroney, not every firefighter at Station 51 has embraced Pascal as the new Chief. Herrmann, however, warmed up to Pascal quickly, even though the new character claimed the desk that was meant for him according to Boden’s plans. Therefore, how has Eigenberg – who has been a part of all thirteen seasons of Chicago Fire so far – handled Herrmann’s relationship with Pascal this season? He stated:

I didn’t receive specific instructions on how to perform it, as it should be played up a notch for TV, but in truth, there is intense competition among real firefighters for positions. However, there’s also a strong camaraderie, involving both men and women, among them. Upon his arrival, we had remarks from actors such as, “Pascal displays some quirky behaviors,” but another actor added, “He’s displaying this behavior towards us, but should we like him? Yes, I do!

Dermot Mulroney did an excellent job making his character likable, even though the circumstances weren’t favorable for Pascal. Eigenberg added that he sees life as something that will happen naturally, without trying to control its course.

Filming for the year wasn’t over when the One Chicago press event took place, and during this time, the actor discussed what more he intended to contribute to his upcoming scenes, if Chicago Fire permitted improvising in its production. Eigenberg stated:

I’ve been reviewing some material for tomorrow, and there’s a line I planned to include that might get cut due to its confrontational nature. You see, it involves a scene with another character, and I was thinking of delivering it as, “Hey, don’t try to push my buttons!” However, the dialogue isn’t written exactly like that, so I’m unsure if they’ll allow it. [laughs] It’s uncommon for us to deviate from the script, but I’d like to add a touch more tension or conflict to the scene.

Fans may first wonder about what’s happening in the upcoming fall finale, as Chicago Fire is known for significant events and suspenseful endings. The preview hints that it might be wise to get ready for an exciting roller coaster ride this coming Wednesday evening. Here’s a sneak peek:
