As a long-time admirer of the illustrious career of Denzel Washington, I must say that his recent clarification about his future plans has left me both relieved and exhilarated. The man is a living legend, an actor par excellence, and the thought of him stepping back from the limelight was more than my heart could bear. However, knowing that he’s not retiring but merely transitioning into a new phase of his career, behind the camera, brings a fresh wave of excitement.
Legendary actor Denzel Washington, known for his iconic roles in Hollywood, has clarified his statements about retirement. It seems he’s not actually retiring but planning a career shift, expressing interest in moving behind the camera. In an interview with @seasonedbf, Washington explained his recent comments, delving into the different phases of life in his characteristic philosophical manner.
“I didn’t mean that I was planning to fully retire, rather I said it needs to be something engaging for me. Instead, I am more drawn towards working behind the camera. That might be five years from now. Life is divided into three parts: learning, earning, and giving back. At this stage of my life, I’m in the ‘giving back’ phase.
Previously, Washington never explicitly stated “retirement,” which led film enthusiasts everywhere to worry about bidding adieu to a legendary actor. However, in recent times, he clarified that instead of retiring, his acting career is set for a transformation. He plans to shift focus from acting to directing, an area where he has previously achieved success with movies like The Great Debaters and Fences. Furthermore, Washington expressed thoughts about handing over the acting mantle to upcoming talent, including his son John David Washington who starred in Tenet.
I’m not planning to retire completely, but it doesn’t mean my journey ends on June 5th. To suggest that I could keep going at the same pace as you all is rather unrealistic; it would be quite foolish of me.
Denzel Washington Has the MCU, Shakespeare & More in the Pipeline
Fortunately, there are still numerous movies starring Denzel Washington yet to come, as he’s shared that he’s working on a historical epic, multiple adaptations of Shakespeare’s works, and continues his involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I don’t know how many more films I’m gonna make. Probably not that many. I wan to do things I haven’t done. I played Othello at 22 and I’m about to play Othello at 70. After that I’m playing Hannibal. After that I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film. After that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that I’m gonna do the film Othello. After that I’m gonna do King Lear. After that I’m gonna retire.”
