As a long-time fan of Sterling K. Brown‘s captivating performances, I am beyond excited about his new series, Paradise. The man has proven time and again that he can sink his teeth into any role and make it his own, from Randall Pearson to Nate Lahey Jr. Now, he’s taking on the intriguing character of Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent under investigation for the murder of the president.
In his latest show titled “Paradise“, Sterling K. Brown is currently being scrutinized over allegations of a presidential murder.
Back in 2023, the announcement of the Hulu series sparked my excitement, yet there was little information available about the creative direction that Dan Fogelman, the genius behind “This Is Us”, and Brown were planning for their reunion project. Just under a year after the Emmy-winning and much-loved NBC drama brought its remarkable journey to an end, Hulu decided to greenlight the series without even requiring a pilot episode first.
Currently, the series titled “Paradise” is being formed, complete with a trailer, synopsis, and a scheduled premiere date on Jan. 28, 2025. Additionally, an intriguing stunt is in place that encourages viewers to visit the Instagram account @ParadiseonHulu for further show details before the account becomes private this Friday. The series starts off with three initial episodes, followed by weekly releases of the subsequent episodes thereafter.
The story takes place in a peaceful haven populated by influential figures from around the globe. However, their quiet lives are disrupted dramatically as a startling murder shatters the peace, leading to an intense investigation filled with high-stakes drama.
In the trailer (shown below), it’s not portrayed as a peaceful neighborhood. Instead, we see Xavier Collins, played by Brown and head of the Secret Service at the White House, under intense scrutiny following the president’s (portrayed by James Marsden) mysterious death, found next to his bed. The investigation takes an intriguing twist when a flashback reveals that Collins was privy to sensitive information. This now puts him in a precarious position as he’s being guided from within on how to navigate the ensuing interrogations.
In this game, I’m joined by some fantastic actors including Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin, and Percy Daggs IV. They really bring the characters to life!
When talking to THR after the conclusion of “This Is Us”, it’s possible that Brown may have hinted at a future political drama, potentially reconnecting him with his “This Is Us” supervisor. The series finale showed his character, Randall Pearson, pondering greater White House ambitions, leading to this journalist inquiring if a political spinoff might be on the horizon in the future.
Brown shared that his idea originated when someone posted on Twitter suggesting Sterling Brown for the role of president on ‘The West Wing’. He playfully reached out to Aaron Sorkin, saying if he was considering anything, to let him know. The response was encouraging, and Dan proposed an ambitious plan: making Randall the president, with Sorkin stepping in as the new ‘West Wing’ writer. Brown found this idea quite ambitious.
He acknowledged that if the script was penned by Fogelman, he’d seriously think about it, and hinted at a potential future return to the character of Randall. In his own words, “I’ll certainly take a look if Fogelman is involved.
Fogelman highlighted to THR that a casual remark in the finale of This Is Us hinted at the Democratic National Committee inviting Randall to Iowa, which is usually the first step in a presidential campaign. He described Randall’s political journey as the most significant parallel in the show to The Sopranos’ mysterious ending, leaving viewers to interpret what transpired. According to the creator, there were numerous discussions about how they would portray the end of Randall’s political journey without revealing too much. They collectively decided that showing Randall in the White House wouldn’t align with the show’s essence and might be a bit jarring. Instead, they preferred concluding on a note suggesting more to come for this remarkable character without actually depicting his arrival at the White House.
Maybe, “Paradise” could be considered a hidden gem for devoted “This Is Us” viewers, since it brings Brown into close contact with the President (POTUS), at least initially within the series.
The second show on Hulu for Fogelman, titled “Paradise,” joins “Only Murders in the Building” where he serves as an executive producer. Similarly, Brown appears in the upcoming limited series on Hulu titled “Washington Black,” also produced by 20th TV, and its release date is yet to be announced.
The series called “Paradise” is produced by 20th Television, with Fogelman having an overall contract. It’s executive-produced by Fogelman, Brown, Requa, Ficarra, Hoberg, Rosenthal, and Beers.
