As a longtime fan of The Karate Kid franchise, I am beyond excited for the upcoming season 6 of Cobra Kai. Having grown up with Ralph Macchio and Martin Kove’s iconic rivalry, it’s fascinating to see how the story has evolved while still staying true to its roots.
In our last encounter with the Cobra Kai cast, they were making their way through the sixth and final season of the series, which had led them to the Sekai Taikai – a global tournament known for pushing every participant to their absolute limit. Since the season is being split into three parts, this could be seen as the Empire Strikes Back segment of the finale. There are still many unanswered questions following Cobra Kai Season 5, and we anticipate these will be resolved. However, before that, a fresh danger is set to invade the dojo – prepare for The Iron Dragons.
It’s clear that the final scene in Cobra Kai Season 6 Episode 5 hinted at the reappearance of John Kreese (Martin Kove) as the leader of the Cobra Kai squad. Additionally, it was revealed that Tory (Peyton List), feeling deceived by her Miyagi-Do friends, ran to Kreese. This situation is bound to stir up a lot of drama. Interestingly, when Netflix unveiled Mortal Kombat actor Lewis Tan as a new addition to the show, it was mentioned that he would be spearheading a fresh team called The Iron Dragons. This revelation has definitely piqued our curiosity.
It’s only natural that the California kids from Miyagi-Do will encounter fresh fighting methods and rigorous combat tactics when they step into the arena of the worldwide Sekai Taikai. During a Cobra Kai press event, I inquired Chozen actor Yuki Okumoto about what karate enthusiasts can anticipate regarding this new threat posed by The Iron Dragons. Having joined The Karate Kid series as an antagonist, Okumoto is well-versed in the challenge. He presented quite a challenge for Ralph Macchio even in The Karate Kid: Part 2. When questioned about The Iron Dragons, Okumoto shared with TopMob his thoughts on what awaits fans in this upcoming series.
I’ll tell you this much. The Iron Dragons are quite an elite group of martial artists. And I think they pose the biggest threat to the whole tournament, (and) all the competitors. They come from a different mindset, I think, and they have this different level of competitiveness that nobody’s ever seen before. So I think, as far as who they are, they’re the top ones, and they’re going to really push Miyagi-Do for sure. And hopefully we will prevail. We don’t know. But they’re the toughest.
Later on, possibly referencing the forthcoming “Wicked” film set to hit cinemas, Ralph Macchio made a fitting comparison for The Iron Dragons using these words.
They create the ‘We’re not in Kansas anymore’ (moment) for our kids.
“A significant factor contributing to my affection for ‘Cobra Kai’ is its consistent use of familiar storytelling tropes. It may not surprise you that it isn’t exactly unpredictable. However, when a major tournament like the Sekai Taikai occurs in the show, there comes a time when the characters we’ve been following begin to feel outmatched in terms of skill. This is similar to what happened to Daniel (played by Macchio) during the All-Valley tournament in the original ‘Karate Kid’. Essentially, we’re not breaking new ground with this story.
In the series Cobra Kai, it’s significant because we have grown attached to the characters involved in the fights – Samantha (Mary Mouser), Miguel (Xolo Mariduena), Robby (Tanner Buchanan) and the other young fighters. Therefore, we are eager to watch and find out if they succeed or overcome their challenges.
Starting this coming Friday, November 15th, fans with a Netflix subscription can stream episodes 4 through 8 of Cobra Kai. Keep an eye out for more updates as we expect the final season to wrap up in 2025. Stay tuned!
