The Students x Bodega Field Trip Reimagined What A Golf Outing Could Be

As someone who has been following the evolving landscape of streetwear and golf fashion for years, I must say that the Students x Bodega Field Trip was nothing short of a game-changer. Coming from a background where I’ve seen countless events trying to bridge these two worlds, this one truly stood out.

Last weekend, a LA-based brand known for blending streetwear with golf attire, held its second major event, titled “Field Trip,” in collaboration with Bodega, at Montebello, California. Unlike traditional 18-hole golf outings, this event aimed to be more accessible by centralizing activities around a single “Stadium” hole. This setup not only reduced the event’s environmental footprint but also created a lively atmosphere.

The partnership with retailer Bodega highlighted Students ability to bridge the gap between golf and streetwear. Students’ founder Michael Huynh is recognized in streetwear as the founder of Publish Brand, and with new label Students he’s capitalizing on his cut-and-sew garment know-how to develop a community of golf fashion enthusiasts. Much of that audience was in attendance on Saturday afternoon in LA including recent “Creator Classic” star Roger Steele, The Number Thirty Three’s Justin Eldridge, TV host Hally Leadbetter and others. Golf creator/entrepreneur Sam Yi and comedian LouLou Gonzalez were the eventual winners of the tournament.

The structure of the competition took a bit of getting used to initially, but once everyone grasped it, it quickly gained popularity. In total, 32 participants were grouped into 16 pairs of teams. The preliminary round gathered four teams at a time in a sudden death ‘closest to the pin’ contest. Following this, half of the competitors advanced, and the remaining games unfolded in an alternating shot format until only two teams reached the finals. Throughout the day, spectators could come and go, and they were encouraged to personalize their own camouflage headcovers or Vans Slip-On shoes.

The Field Trip provided an opportunity for Students to highlight some recently established connections within the Los Angeles golf scene. Among these collaborations are the Los Angeles Golf Club, one of the six teams participating in the approaching Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), who set up a Dryvebox simulator near their course, granting two lucky spectators a chance to qualify for the tournament. In addition, Acura teamed up with Students to provide a brand-new car as an incentive for anyone capable of achieving a hole-in-one (unfortunately, no one managed it this time). Lastly, Montreal artist FVCKRENDER worked together with Students to create custom trophies from silver and resin for the triumphant team.

To put it another way, the Students x Bodega Field Trip “Stadium Edition” demonstrated that emerging golf brands are relying heavily on events as a means to cultivate a feeling of camaraderie within their community, with support from larger corporations such as Acura, Topgolf, and Callaway.
