Charli XCX Says the Nation Will Decide If Marcello Hernández’s Outfit Is “Brat” in ‘SNL’ Promo

As a long-time fan of Charli XCX, I can confidently say that her journey to hosting Saturday Night Live has been nothing short of electrifying! From her early days as a bratty pop sensation to her recent stints as a musical guest on the show, Charli has always managed to keep us entertained with her unique blend of charm, wit, and unapologetic authenticity.

Prior to her Saturday Night Live hosting debut this coming weekend, singer Charli XCX engaged in playful banter with cast member Marcello Hernández in a recently released promotional video.

During the video, Hernandez is curious about where his attire fits on the “brat” scale. After introducing herself as Charli XCX, the host and musical guest for that week on SNL, Hernandez then queries, “Charli, do you think my outfit is bratty?

She replies, “There’s a fine distinction between being a brat and being bold,” to which Hernández queries, “And which category do I fall into?

“That’s for the nation to decide,” Charli says with a grin.

The promotion alludes to the “Brat Summer” trend that swept across the internet this year, which emerged after the pop star launched her sixth studio album titled “brat” in June. To clarify the term “brat”, the singer herself described it in a TikTok video as follows: “It’s about that girl who can be a bit messy, enjoys partying, and sometimes says things that aren’t so smart. She might have her moments of vulnerability but she also knows how to enjoy life and is very open and straightforward. There’s an edge to her – she does impulsive things, but in a way, it’s just being ‘brat’. You could be ‘brat’, too.

Previously on SNL, they had touched upon the “brat” phenomenon. Specifically, during their 50th season, cast member Bowen Yang portrayed the “360” singer in a sketch for a fictitious talk show titled The Talk Talk Show with Charli XCX.

After the performance, Charli complimented Yang’s portrayal of her, saying on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM channel, “I’m a fan of Bowen, and I genuinely believe he did an excellent job. I was truly impressed with the texture of the hair, to be honest. I thought it was a really convincing wig. It was good. It was cool.

Despite this being Charli’s debut as the host of SNL, she has graced its stage before, performing musically back in 2014 and again in 2022.
