Star Trek: Lower Decks' Dawnn Lewis Told Us The Touching Comments She Gets Most From Fans About Carol Freeman: 'That's Just Beautiful'

As a longtime Trekkie myself, I wholeheartedly appreciate the emotional depth that Star Trek: Lower Decks brings to the table, particularly through the character development of Captain Carol Freeman, played by Dawnn Lewis. Her portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship that evolves over time resonates deeply with many fans, and it’s heartening to see such positive feedback.

Although being a comedic animated series like Star Trek: Lower Decks may not typically evoke strong emotions, it’s still capable of resonating deeply with fans just as other franchise shows do. This is something voice actor Dawnn Lewis, a dedicated Trekkie herself, recently shared during an interview with TopMob when discussing her role in the Paramount+ original series. Besides discussing her long-standing fandom, she also disclosed some heartfelt messages from fans who find a strong connection with her character, Freeman.

As readers continue to stream the newest episodes of Lower Decks hitting the 2024 TV schedule with a Paramount+ subscription, I had the honor of talking to actress Dawnn Lewis about what she hears most from fans about Captain Carol Freeman. Surprisingly, there wasn’t any one question that came to mind, but she did share she hears from a lot of fans who relate to Freeman’s unique relationship with her daughter, Beckett Mariner:

I frequently observe feedback about mother-daughter relationships, particularly that of Captain Freeman and Beckett. Initially, their connection was somewhat strained. However, over the course of five seasons, they developed a greater understanding and patience for one another. They grew to work together more effectively, building trust and showing genuine care. Many mothers and daughters have expressed that they identify with this dynamic, stating that the show has provided them with insights on how to communicate better and collaborate more effectively. This improvement in their relationships is significant and truly heartwarming. Indeed, it’s beautiful. It’s really beautiful to see such positive impact from a fictional relationship.

It’s particularly delightful to hear Dawnn Lewis speak, given that Star Trek isn’t always known for portraying healthy relationships between parents and children. Characters like Spock and Tom Paris had strained relationships with their fathers, and Worf’s father-son bond with Alexander was less than ideal. To be honest, I could list more dysfunctional family ties than heartwarming ones, which highlights the point.

Mike McMahan discussed the evolving bond between Freeman and the Mariner character during his sneak peek of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 to TopMob. Interestingly, the once rebellious daughter and her mother, who might be overly proud, seem to share common ground. Unfortunately, this will be the last season, so we won’t get to witness their relationship progress any further, particularly considering Dawnn Lewis’ account of fans’ positive reactions to scenes similar to the one mentioned below.

It’s great to know that stories often don’t end permanently in this universe, and there’s a possibility that Lewis’ Carol Freeman could show up on an upcoming Star Trek series. Tawny Newsome, who voiced Mariner in Lower Decks, is also developing a live-action Star Trek comedy. If everything aligns, she might work with her Lower Decks co-stars again, implying that there’s a possibility we could see Freeman and Mariner together after Lower Decks ends, but now potentially in live-action!

Currently, both fans and some members of the cast are hopeful that Star Trek: Lower Decks might carry on, despite its termination on Paramount+. This optimism could stem from the fact that Prodigy was reinstated by Netflix following its cancellation, although it’s important to note that Netflix has yet to confirm if they will renew the series for Season 3. If this happens, there’s a possibility that Lower Decks might become accessible with a Netflix subscription too.

At present, you can rely on the fact that more episodes of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will stream every Thursday on Paramount+ for another month or so. After this period, you’ll likely be able to rewatch these episodes as much as you want on the same platform. However, keep in mind that things might change if the series decides to move to a different platform later on.
