Kelly Reilly Addresses 'Yellowstone' Rumors & Season 6

As a movie buff with years of binge-watching under my belt and a soft spot for gripping Western dramas, I can confidently say that the return of Yellowstone Season 5 has been nothing short of exhilarating. The enigmatic performance of Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton has always left me on the edge of my seat, her character’s complexities mirroring the intricate tapestry of the Dutton family saga.

After a prolonged absence, Yellowstone Season 5 has made its comeback, leaving fans curious about its continuation and filled with various speculations. The captivating Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, has provided some clarity on these matters while also hinting at potential developments for her cherished character and the widely acclaimed series. As of now, the concluding episodes of Season 5 are being broadcasted on the Paramount Network, but there’s a buzz online suggesting a sixth season and the possible return of Beth and her husband Rip. Reilly shared with MovieWeb:

There are so many rumors and I don’t know where they all come from. Literally don’t believe what you read
. There are creative conversations that can happen but in their own time, and I think that’s what we’re going to wait for. We only just finished this, we only finished filming in September. They’re still cutting this thing together. We’re both just going to do some other things, and then we’ll see. We’ll see.”

However, one thing is clear. Reilly shared:

If Taylor Sheridan is inspired, then I will be there in a heartbeat if he wants to do it.

It’s obvious from how excitedly Reilly talks about returning for Season 5’s final stretch that she has a deep affection for this world. Her words suggest that there might be more of Beth Dutton in store for us. “We were eager to return,” she enthused. “Everyone who works on this project cherishes the experience, longs for those collaborative moments, and missed it terribly. Returning to wrap up this series, the scripts were exceptional, and we couldn’t wait to dive back in.

In Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, it’s no surprise that spin-offs have been common, with the series 1883 and 1923 delving into the Dutton family history. The fate of beloved Dutton characters from the original show remains uncertain. Reilly could simply be keeping things under wraps, and Beth’s character might meet her end when the series concludes. In the dramatic Western saga, a main character’s demise is seldom questioned. However, it’s possible that negotiations with Costner might occur, leading to an unexpected return in a follow-up. Although such a scenario seems improbable, never underestimate the power of a dedicated fan base and substantial financial investments.

On Beth Dutton’s War with Jamie

It seems as though Beth and her brother Jamie’s relationship was predetermined to face conflicts that go beyond typical sibling disputes. In a significant manner, Season 5 is escalating this tension to its peak. Reilly expressed intense thoughts about the reasons and methods behind it all, sharing with us:

Over time, it has become increasingly complex, weighty, and emotionally charged. Initially, it seemed like simple sibling rivalry in the first season, but as years passed, it became clear that this is a profound betrayal on a soulful level that has weighed heavily upon both characters. To put it simply, she never felt she could trust him.

How this sibling rivalry on steroids plays out will be the meat of the epic series’ final half-season. The hardest thing for any long-running popular series to do is to end. The nature of television is to extend a conflict and renew it. The creative forces always keep finding a way to revisit the core conflicts and stir up new drama. This creates a world of loose ends, and a sense that nothing can ever truly be completed. That’s why more times than not we are left with unsatisfying endings, or open-ended ones. Can Yellowstone buck the trend and leave everyone happy? It’s a tall order and we’ll know soon. Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 airs on Paramount Network Sunday nights at 8pm through Dec. 15, 2024.
