This film checks all the boxes on my zombie movie wish list: it offers a gripping narrative about a bereaved man on a quest to find his sister amidst the chaos, it brims with emotional depth and humanity, and it doesn’t shy away from delivering some gruesome, adrenaline-pumping zombie encounters. And here’s an intriguing twist: one of the central characters is none other than a feline friend! This chilling masterpiece has left me spellbound and ranks among the top horror films I’ve watched in recent memory.
I’ve Decided That The Airport Is The Last Place I Want To Be During A Full-On Zombie-Virus Panic
Initially in “Apocalypse Z“, the primary character, Manel (Francisco Ortiz), eventually consents to his sister’s plea for him to depart from Spain and join them in the Canary Islands as a refuge against the rapidly expanding TSJ virus. However, chaos ensues as he prepares to embark on his flight with his feline companion, Lúculo, causing the airport to be overrun with fear and pandemonium.
This sequence’s rhythm is captivating, transitioning seamlessly from an ordinary day at the airport with passengers patiently waiting to board their flights, to utter chaos as the ticketing kiosks malfunction, flight cancellations flash everywhere on screens, and phones ring urgently with emergency alerts. It’s sheer pandemonium.
Though no actual zombies appear in this thrilling scene, it made me ponder – an airport would be the absolute worst place to find myself during a full-blown zombie-virus outbreak. It’s essentially a dead-end, packed with tens of thousands of panicked individuals who might trample or devour you if they become zombies, and even on a normal day, everyone is already irritable or edgy without the virus.
Lúculo Instantly Became One Of My Favorite Movie Cats, But He’s In Some Wild Situations
Throughout the years, there have been some remarkable cinematic cats gracing our screens, and Lúculo, always by Manel’s side in “Apocalypse Z”, quickly became one of my most beloved feline characters on screen. This cat is thrown into all sorts of nail-biting, dangerous scenarios throughout the movie – everything from a thrilling escape on the back of a motorbike amidst a zombie horde to dodging gunfire from menacing adversaries who seek to harm his owner, slipping through a hospital overrun with TSJ-infected creatures, and navigating various modes of transportation.
Lucius, much like any cat in his predicament, carries out these actions with the breed’s characteristic flair and an unwillingness to remain silent during critical moments due to hunger. Throughout Apocalypse Z, there were instances where I found myself hoping that Lucius would make it through safely, but also times when I thought to myself “Sweetie, please stop meowing excessively.
Yet, I couldn’t help but ponder, what location might Lúculo be relieving himself as it seems impossible for my cats to endure such lengthy intervals without a tidied litter box.
The Way The Movie Handles Grief Is Astonishingly Powerful
In “Apocalypse Z,” it’s not just the TSJ virus that steals the show, turning people into a mix between the infected from “28 Days Later” and the classic undead from George A. Romero’s “Living Dead” series. The movie also delves deeply into themes of grief, loss, and human resilience, doing so in a surprisingly impactful manner.
At the beginning of the film, Manel is deeply mourning his wife who passed away a year ago in a devastating car accident. Isolated from society, he initially ignores the emerging zombie crisis that threatens to dismantle the European Union and ultimately the world. However, as time goes on, his sorrow transforms into motivation for survival, compelling him to live on.
Apocalypse Z Has A Lot Of Zombie Movie Tropes, But Thankfully It Avoids One Of My Least Favorite
In the film “Apocalypse Z”, numerous cliches typical of zombie movies are present, some beneficial while others less so. The airport chaos scene is there, as well as an immense traffic jam spanning kilometers in Spain. Manel develops friendship with an elderly neighbor who shares wisdom about life before her demise, and yes, even a zombie baby makes an appearance.
I Really Hope Apocalypse Z’s Success On Amazon Leads To A Sequel
As suggested by the title page of “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” on Amazon, this newly released zombie movie is currently the second most-watched film on Prime Video. I fervently hope that its popularity on the streaming platform will pave the way for a sequel, given the ominous message from Manel’s sister urging him to abandon the Canary Islands moments before the closing credits. The ending leaves us in a perilous and unpredictable state, hinting at potential danger ahead.
The title “The Beginning of the End” hints that we haven’t finished seeing characters like Manel and Lúculo. A follow-up story where they reach the Canary Islands could be exciting, offering a powerful emotional conclusion with Manel reconnecting with his sister and his nephew finally meeting Lúculo after so long. In simpler terms, I’m not shy about expressing my desire for more feline characters in horror films.
Time alone can reveal whether or not “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” will continue with a sequel, thereby becoming part of the roster of upcoming zombie films and series. For now though, you might find plenty of exciting horror movies available on Amazon to keep you entertained in the interim.
