As a devout follower of Kevin Smith‘s cinematic universe and having spent countless hours revisiting his films over the years, I can confidently say that the confirmation of “Dogma 2” has sent my heart soaring to the heavens and back. This sequel has been long awaited by fans like myself, who have eagerly anticipated a return to Jay, Silent Bob, and their extraordinary adventures in Smith’s unique, irreverent style.
After creating sequels for nearly all of his films with varying success, it has been officially announced that Kevin Smith will be producing a follow-up to one of his most acclaimed movies. The film, Dogma, featured the iconic duo Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), alongside Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), an angel named Metatron (Alan Rickman), the 13th disciple Rufus (Chris Rock), as they embarked on a journey to locate God (Alanis Morissette). Their goal was to prevent demons Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from re-entering heaven. This movie has gained cult status, much like many of Smith’s other productions, while simultaneously sparking controversy among religious groups.
For the past 25 years, fans have eagerly anticipated a sequel to Kevin Smith’s movie, “Dogma.” During this year’s Vulture Festival, Smith announced that he is indeed working on the long-awaited follow-up. Starting off jokingly about fan skepticism over a sequel of such a cherished film, he said, “Some folks will be like, ‘Don’t mess it up. You’ll ruin it.'” Yet, it seems Smith has discovered an idea that’s worth coming back for. He went on to explain further.
“And I’m here to tell you: I will. I’m f*cking tickled. I found a way in.”
Kevin Smith has kept quiet about significant storyline points regarding “Dogma 2”. However, he hinted that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will reprise their roles for the sequel. The original “Dogma” was their first film collaboration after “Good Will Hunting”, which Smith is said to have helped save. Both actors have made appearances in Smith’s subsequent films, but this time around, the director suggests their involvement will extend beyond brief cameos. He stated:
For over two and a half decades, I’ve managed to keep [Good Will Hunting] in the limelight, making them appear in numerous films. You can anticipate their appearance – not just a cameo, but a significant one. The only way we can make a Dogma sequel is if they’re involved, so be prepared to see them there.
‘Dogma 2’ Could Have Happened Much Sooner, But We’re Glad It Didn’t
For quite some time now, fans have kept their fingers crossed, waiting for Kevin Smith to announce a sequel, given his history of creating follow-ups for movies like “Clerks” and “Jay and Silent Bob,” with another one in the pipeline. However, Smith has disclosed that “Dogma 2” might have been made earlier, but there was a compelling explanation behind his decision to pass on making the sequel years ago.
In the beginning of his career, Smith’s films were created by The Weinstein Company, and he collaborated closely with Harvey Weinstein. However, when allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein surfaced in 2017, Smith chose to disassociate from the entire enterprise and vowed that any earnings from his movies under their company would be donated to Women in Film. Moreover, Smith shared that Harvey Weinstein had proposed a deal for Dogma 2 some years back, which he rejected initially.
Over the past few months, Dogma enthusiasts have had quite an exciting time, as the movie is making a comeback with a fresh re-release. For years, it was rumored to be under the control of The Weinstein Company, but lately, Smith has managed to retrieve the film rights. This development led to the movie being screened in theaters once more for its 25th anniversary and set for a new home video release. Fingers crossed that it becomes available for streaming soon!
