Kith's Limited Edition Bose 901 Speaker Revives A Historic Midcentury Design

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive audio experiences, the revival of Bose‘s iconic 901 speakers, in collaboration with Kith, has me absolutely thrilled! The midcentury modern aesthetic and the subtle tweaks to amplify the retro feel are right up my alley. I remember the days when I would crank up the volume on my old stereo, trying to replicate a live concert experience at home.

Kith is moving forward in the home market by teaming up with Bose to reintroduce the iconic 901 speakers, which were first launched in 1968 and marked Bose’s initial foray into home audio technology. This joint project, created to mark Bose’s 60th anniversary, pays homage to the mid-century modern style of the original design while making minor adjustments to enhance its vintage aesthetic.

Ronnie Fieg posted on Instagram about their collaboration, explaining that “the 901s were initially conceived due to Dr. Bose’s innovative ambition to create a home speaker system capable of mimicking a real-life concert. By employing cutting-edge tech, they combined direct and reflected sounds to provide an enveloping audio experience identical to live performances.

To replicate the ambiance of a live concert, the original 901 model featured one speaker driver at the front and eight at the rear on each unit, meticulously arranged for an enveloping sound experience. As of now, the technical details of this remake haven’t been disclosed yet. Fieg collaborated with Mark Jupiter, a frequent partner of Kith, to bring the revamped design into reality. In his post, Fieg expressed, “Mark has created the furniture in my home and Kith stores globally, and I can’t think of anyone better suited to breathe new life into this project.

Compared to the initial 901 design, which features a metallic tulip-shaped pedestal, the Kith model emphasizes its midcentury style by extending the wooden frame material to the base and incorporating brushed brass accents. Moreover, the Jupiter design is given a more gentle appearance through its rounded edges rather than the sharp lines characteristic of the original design.
