As a seasoned gamer who’s traversed countless virtual worlds and plotted through numerous narrative twists and turns, I can confidently say that the upcoming movie adaptation of “Wicked” has piqued my interest like no other. The fact that it’s a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” one of my all-time favorite stories, is just the icing on the cake.

Essentially, I’d say, the two-film adaptation of the renowned, multi-award-winning Broadway musical offers a surprising backstory for the notorious Wicked Witch of the West. This witch, Elphaba, once walked the halls of Shiz University alongside Glinda the Good. Yet, as many fans know, her villainous reputation was unjustly bestowed upon her by the very hand of the Wizard himself.
The aforementioned Wicked song, which premiered on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, is quite catchy, recalling the staccato, earwig-y flow of the rap section in Blondie’s 1981 hit, “Rapture.” Check it out below!

What is Wicked about?
According to Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” the Broadway musical and its two-part film adaptation present a prequel story for the “Wizard of Oz.” In this version, Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, is initially a gifted student at Shiz University, sharing a dorm room with the well-liked Glinda. However, things take a turn when Elphaba visits the Emerald City and encounters the supposedly “wonderful” Wizard (played by Jeff Goldblum), who may not be as admirable as previously believed.
Producer Marc Platt, who was instrumental in bringing the original stage version to life, explains in the official production notes supplied by Universal Pictures that making movies allows us to delve deeper into the themes explored on stage. He points out that films enable us to explore various settings such as Munchkinland, Shiz University, dormitories and classrooms, the Animal’s homes, the enchanting Emerald City, and the Wizard’s throne room. When they decided to turn “Wicked” into a movie, their aim was to bring to life many aspects that couldn’t be dramatized on stage – from flying with monkeys to soaring over Oz. These are places only a camera can capture. The movies make the most of this opportunity, crafting a unique viewing experience.
