As a lifelong fan of the Dune saga, I can hardly contain my excitement for HBO’s new series, “Dune: Prophecy.” Having grown up reading the books and marveling at their richly imagined world, I find myself drawn to the enigmatic Bene Gesserit and their ambitious plans.
Without a doubt, the 2024 movie sensation, “Dune: Part Two“, left audiences and critics spellbound by its exceptional cinematography, music, special effects, and set design. A sequel to the mesmerizing 2021 film “Dune“, these movies successfully transformed Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel into a visual spectacle that had yet to be fully achieved on the silver screen. Given its box office success, it’s no wonder the world of “Dune” is poised for further exploration on television screens. With more novels waiting to be adapted, viewers will now have the chance to unravel the origins of “Dune‘s notorious sisterhood and the inception of their prophecy that spans thousands of years.
As a passionate connoisseur of cinematic masterpieces, I’d put it this way: Step back 10,000 years before the blockbuster sci-fi saga of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, and you’ll find yourself immersed in Dune: Prophecy – a gripping prequel series. This series delves into the roots of the enigmatic Bene Gesserit, a matriarchal sect shrouded in mystery. At the heart of this drama are Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula (Olivia Williams), noble sisters hailing from House Harkonnen, who orchestrate the creation of these extraordinary women. Driven by ambition and relentless in their pursuit, these sisters navigate forces that could alter the course of human history itself. The Bene Gesserit, with their intricate layers, demand an explanation to fully grasp their role within the Dune universe.
Who Are the Bene Gesserit in ‘Dune’?
In the realm of Dune, the Bene Gesserit represent an exclusive group of highly influential women, both spiritually and politically. They function covertly behind the scenes, shaping the dynamics of the Great Houses within the Imperium by serving as counselors and often becoming concubines. Through rigorous training in body and mind over generations, each member gains unique abilities to shape politics according to their vision. One such ability is the Voice, which allows them to control others’ behavior merely through speech, affecting either a person’s thoughts or actions, effectively controlling someone’s conduct when desired.
Women within their ranks are meticulously taught to be exceptionally perceptive and adept at deciphering subtle cues, a skill that often reveals insights others might miss. Moreover, these Bene Gesserit individuals are rigorously trained Truthsayers, capable of discerning deception by scrutinizing verbal and non-verbal cues, physiological responses such as heart rate, among other factors. When employed in conjunction with the Voice, Truthsight serves a dual purpose: it becomes an effective aid for interrogation and can even be used in ways that border on coercion.
Marvelously, I’ve come to appreciate their extraordinary capacity, a skill often referred to as prana-bindu or the “weirding way,” which allows them to consciously control and manipulate every muscle in their body. This includes controlling their internal organs and body chemistry to an astounding degree, even determining the sex of their offspring at conception. Over the centuries, they’ve strategically bred with the Great Houses, producing more females for their cause. Remarkably, those who rise within the ranks to become Reverend Mothers gain something called Other Memory, a genetic memory that encompasses the collective memories of all their female ancestors. This unique gift bestows upon them an immense wealth of knowledge about our universe.
What Is the Goal of the Bene Gesserit in ‘Dune’?
One key aspect of the Bene Gesserit lies in their breeding strategy and the Missionaria Protectiva. Their breeding program is designed to preserve the bloodlines of powerful families, as they mate with leaders and heirs to produce daughters exclusively. These girls are connected to the Great Houses but are also subject to the influence of the Bene Gesserit and their broader agenda. This strategic approach lays the groundwork for the Missionaria Protectiva’s ultimate goal: spreading religious beliefs about a future messiah on less-developed worlds, which they believe will ultimately lead humanity towards a brighter tomorrow.
In my role as a follower, I find myself on a path where legends and predictions pave the way for us, the Bene Gesserit, to become guides, guardians, and instruments of the prophecy we ourselves crafted initially. This journey molds our ultimate ambition, which is the creation of what we refer to as the Kwisatz Haderach – a unique individual with the abilities of a male Reverend Mother. He can tap into both his male and female lineage and possess all knowledge in the known universe through his Other Memory. Via our Missionaria Protectiva, we subtly influence the minds across the Imperium to prepare them for this extraordinary being – the Kwisatz Haderach, a concept we conceived and have been shaping society’s beliefs around.
Why Does the Bene Gesserit Want to Create the Kwisatz Haderach?
In their quest to bring about a brighter human future, the Bene Gesserit aim to breed an individual with extraordinary mental abilities – the Kwisatz Haderach. They believe this being will have the power to transcend space, time, and even the past and present. This ambitious strategy unfolds in the story Dune: Prophecy.
Since the Bene Gesserit were established post-Butlerian Jihad, a conflict between humans and intelligent machines that almost annihilated humanity, it becomes understandable why they would desire to cultivate such a formidable intellect. Moreover, having such an intellect under their dominion offers additional advantages. If they command the Kwisatz Haderach, who is rumored to possess all knowledge within the known universe, they will effectively rule over the Imperium. Catch new episodes of Dune: Prophecy each Sunday on HBO and stream them online via Max.
