As a seasoned entertainment enthusiast with a soft spot for innovation, I am absolutely thrilled about the emergence of Promise, the new Hollywood studio that is set to revolutionize the industry by integrating generative artificial intelligence into its projects. With George Strompolos, Jamie Byrne, and Dave Clark at the helm – veterans from the world of creator-driven content – this studio promises to be a game-changer. Their vision for leveraging AI to empower creators and develop high-quality storytelling is nothing short of inspiring.
A fresh Hollywood production company is planning to center every project around advanced generative AI, and they have significant financial support from two heavyweights in the industry: The North Road Company and Andreessen Horowitz.
The innovative studio, titled Promise, is being spearheaded by George Strompolos, the former CEO and founder of Fullscreen – a company specializing in creator-focused software and media. Additionally, Jamie Byrne, who has recently overseen creator partnerships for YouTube, is also part of the leadership team. Lastly, we have Dave Clark, an AI-inclined filmmaker, joining the group.
Strompolis takes on the role as CEO, while Byrne assumes residence and operates as the COO, and Clark becomes the head of creative affairs as the Chief Creative Officer.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I secured funding from Peter Chernin’s North Road and a16z partner Andrew Chen. This investment not only fills our coffers but also grants us the formidable resources of some of Hollywood and Silicon Valley’s biggest influencers. Previously, Chernin’s TCG has backed Fullscreen, so I’m excited to be part of their growing portfolio!
Promise is debuting at a time when the entertainment industry is experiencing significant disruption, as many professionals are concerned about the impact of General Artificial Intelligence on the way the industry functions. Last year, this technology was a central issue in the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with the actors’ union demanding payment for their members when their work is used in AI-generated projects or roles, and the WGA advocating for stricter guidelines on how the technology can be utilized.
With their experience in creating content by individuals, it’s only natural that the newly established studio is focusing on this area. Their aim is to utilize exclusive software to boost creators’ productions, and they are also planning to collaborate with top AI artists from the genre, well-known Hollywood personalities, and rightsholders to establish a diverse portfolio of groundbreaking movies and TV series over several years.
Strompolos stated that we are pouring resources into a fresh wave of AI specialists who combine conventional filmmaking skills with advanced technical know-how. This unique blend is poised to redefine the bar for AI-driven storytelling quality. We view this as a pivotal shift in the entertainment industry, and to fully exploit its potential, we need to establish a studio that embraces artists, technology, and innovative workflows from the ground up,” said Strompolos.
“There is something undeniably exciting about Generative AI, and we are bullish on George and Promise’s ability to empower storytellers,” Chernin added. “This team understands that prioritizing artists and creatives is the only approach as we begin to apply Generative AI into the creative process, and Promise has the most inventive and user-friendly model we have seen.”
Promise has created a novel piece of software known as MUSE, an integration of advanced Gen AI tools throughout the entire production workflow, serving as the core element in their upcoming projects.
On their website, the founders clearly articulated their company’s vision, which remains focused on fostering creativity.
In this exciting period of innovation, there’s a vast potential, yet it’s not merely sophisticated tech that guarantees success. To breathe life into remarkable narratives, we require exceptional storytellers – authors, performers, producers, directors, visual effects experts, and countless others – who infuse their creativity and imagination into every endeavor. At Promise, technology serves as the foundation, but it’s the creative community that embodies the essence and spirit.
North Road boasts a variety of interests in the production firms such as Kinetic Content, Left/Right, 44 Blue Productions, Words + Pictures, Two One Five Entertainment by Questlove, and Omaha Productions by Peyton Manning. At present, A16z manages a staggering $44 billion in funds, with their investments spanning across companies like AirBnB, Slack, Instacart, Substack, and Roblox.
