Jude Law Offers Honest Update About Sherlock Holmes 3 With Robert Downey Jr.

As a die-hard Sherlock Holmes fan who’s grown up watching the iconic duo in action, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and frustration. On one hand, it’s heartening to know that the creative team behind our beloved franchise is still dedicated to delivering a top-notch story; on the other, it seems like we’re stuck waiting for the third installment longer than it took Watson to recover from his war wounds!

Throughout the years, numerous movies and series featuring Sherlock Holmes and his partner John Watson have graced our screens, each offering unique interpretations of the renowned British detective and his perceptive associate. In essence, these characters serve as a cultural landmark, and when Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law’s Holmes series debuted in 2009, it sparked interest among a fresh audience to appreciate the classic literary pair. Regrettably, fans have been eagerly anticipating the third installment for over a decade now. Recently, however, Law has provided an honest yet encouraging update on the situation.

The actor from “The Grand Budapest Hotel” recently chatted with The Playlist about his upcoming movie, “The Order,” which is based on true events and tackles the topic of white supremacy. During the interview, he also offered some candid insights about the next Sherlock Holmes film in development. Here’s what he shared regarding the project’s current status:

It appears that there’s a fresh version of the script I haven’t gone through yet. The question arises as to its cost and whether or not we could produce it.

It appears as though progress on the third movie remains stagnant, unfortunately. However, a glimmer of hope lies in a new script being developed, and thankfully, there’s no hint of the odd time-traveling plot anymore – something I was relieved to see dropped. Time marches on, but this film project continues. Interestingly, Liam revealed that one cause for the delay is the cast and crew’s commitment to crafting a stellar story, which is reassuring news.

It seems there’s a bit of uncertainty surrounding the production schedule, given that director Guy Ritchie, who was initially associated with the project, is no longer credited. There’s curiosity about whether the script Jude Law mentioned recently is the “brilliant” one Ritchie had discussed in 2023. The original Snatch movie creator, Ritchie, was replaced by Dexter Fletcher as director in 2019, and at present, it appears that Fletcher remains in charge of directing this franchise’s third installment.

Despite being stuck in a holding pattern, Guy Ritchie is reimagining Sherlock Holmes with a fresh, youthful spin. This upcoming series will air on Amazon Prime Video and focuses on the early days of Holmes before he achieved fame as the brilliant detective. Fingers crossed that it retains the same enchantment as the movie series.

In other news, fans should keep in mind that Downey and Law have been occupied with their individual ventures. Given their appearances on both the 2024 TV lineup and movie schedule, it seems likely that the upcoming film might take some time to start production, considering Law’s recent statements as well.

It’s encouraging to learn that the commitment from the creative team remains strong, and a fresh script has emerged. Fingers crossed, there may come a time when audiences can enjoy the next chapter of Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law’s John Watson in a theater near them.
