Data from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative reveals that only 4.5% of films earning over $1 million at the box office between 2019 and 2023 featured a woman as a cinematographer.

Last week, a heated debate arose at Camerimage when the festival’s founder declined to address the petition calling for better gender representation by pledging improvements, unlike Cannes, Berlin, and Tokyo film festivals have done in recent times. Instead, he penned an editorial that appeared to suggest that striving for increased female representation could potentially lead to a lowering of artistic standards within his event.

The reaction from the international film community was immediate, with several leading cinematography guilds publicly condemning the remarks, and filmmakers Steve McQueen (Blitz) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) pulling out of planned appearances in protest.
