As a lifelong Disney enthusiast who has visited the magical parks more times than I can count and spent countless hours researching their rich history, this latest development with “Behind The Attraction” is nothing short of baffling. It’s like Mickey Mouse decided to yank away Goofy’s red nose just as I was about to take a selfie!
Initially, when studios introduced their personal streaming platforms, they highlighted that they owned a significant portion of the content streamed on these platforms. This advantage meant that unlike Netflix, with frequent changes in its content library, services such as Disney+ and HBO Max could theoretically upload content, particularly original content, and keep it there for extended periods. However, we’ve come to understand that even among top-tier streaming services, this is not always the case.
Streaming platforms such as Disney+ and Max are removing some original series and movies due to cost-cutting measures. It appears that in certain instances, these services spend more to keep certain content accessible than they believe they’re earning from them. However, Disney+ has taken an unusual step: one of their original series remains on the platform, but not in its entirety.
Behind The Attraction’s First Episodes Are Gone From Disney+
On Disney+, the first three episodes of the original series titled “Behind the Attraction,” which delved into the tales behind some of Disney Parks’ most beloved rides like Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, and Star Tours, have been temporarily removed from the platform. However, the remaining episodes of Season 1, as well as all of Season 2, are still accessible for viewing.
For someone like me, who’s passionate about Disney Parks, watching Behind the Attraction was enjoyable, yet a bit disappointing as I found most of the content to be familiar information from my extensive reading and viewing about the rides at Disneyland and Disney World. It doesn’t delve as deep as The Imagineering Story does. However, it was engaging and an excellent starting point for those who are curious about the attractions but don’t know a lot yet. Luckily, The Imagineering Story remains untouched and undiminished.
The missing episodes focusing on three renowned Disney Parks’ landmarks aren’t beneficial because these are the attractions that visitors often seek information about. They serve as enticing factors for people to initially watch the show, and may encourage them to continue viewing if they find it appealing.
Why Only Three Episodes?
It’s frustrating and perplexing that “Behind the Attraction” no longer exists anywhere, especially since only three episodes have vanished. What makes this situation even more puzzling is that the series has now resumed with the Tower of Terror episode, which had its own share of controversy. If a controversial episode was going to be removed, at least it would make sense if it were this one.
It’s unusual that Disney+ might choose to remove specific episodes from a highly popular series like this, instead of taking down the whole show or keeping it all up. Given the immense popularity of these three attractions, it seems likely that they are among the most-watched episodes of the entire series. It’s challenging to imagine that they were removed because they had poor viewership numbers.
It seems that these three specific episodes of the show might have some unique rights issues not associated with others, which appears confusing given the production company behind it is Seven Bucks Productions (owned by Dwayne Johnson) who just signed a new development deal with Disney. If any interviewee in those episodes isn’t featured elsewhere and for whom the show no longer holds the rights, this could potentially explain the situation, but it remains unclear.
I’m crossing my fingers that it’s just a technical hiccup or temporary solution until an odd problem gets fixed. It’s really aggravating when entire shows on Disney+ disappear, and it’s even more frustrating when only parts of a show are missing.
