As a film enthusiast who grew up in the golden age of cinema, I can confidently say that Street Trash 2024 is a delightful nod to the past while still managing to carve its own niche in the horror genre. The movie’s clever use of references to classic films and iconic characters from the ’70s, ’80s, and early ’90s truly resonates with me, as it brings back fond memories of the films I hold dear.
Initially, the 1987 movie titled “Street Trash” emerged, a delightful cult classic set in Brooklyn, which later gained recognition as one of the uncommon “melt movies” in the horror genre – these are films featuring melting faces or bodies. In 2024, another film named “Street Trash” has been released digitally. However, its director clarifies that this isn’t a remake. Instead, filmmaker Ryan Kruger’s new work is an extension of the original story’s universe, introducing fresh characters to uphold the legacy of the homeless heroes from the source material.
Among the cast of “Street Trash,” there’s a character named Chef, portrayed by Joe Vaz. If his appearance seems familiar to movie buffs, it might be because he bears a striking resemblance to Stanley Kubrick during a specific period. Ring any bells? This isn’t coincidental, and we got the inside scoop on why from director Kruger in our latest interview. Interestingly enough, Kruger is not only the director but also a passionate film aficionado of the eras when Kubrick was creating some of his most iconic works. Furthermore, there are several other characters in “Street Trash” that share a likeness with stars from classic Hollywood films.
Kruger shared with us that each character in this film contains nods to various other films. For instance, 2-Bit wears red overalls and yellow gloves, similar to Roger Rabbit. Alex’s (Donna Cormack-Thomson) character resembles Ripley from Alien. Ronald is reminiscent of The Fisher King’s Robin Williams. And Chef carries the likeness of Stanley Kubrick, with his jacket and glasses. There are numerous subtle Easter eggs scattered throughout the film, drawing inspiration from my favorite movies spanning the 70s, 80s, and early 90s.
Street Trash 2024: More a Remix Than a Remake
As a die-hard fan of the View Askewniverse, I was thrilled when Kruger hinted at the possibility of characters from his Street Trash movie making an appearance in any of his upcoming projects. He explained, “You see, people who haven’t watched the original film might be intrigued and go revisit it. Many viewers discovered my work through Fried Barry, my first film, and if they enjoy this new project, they’ll seek out Fried Barry to see more of my work. It all seems to connect in a beautiful way.
Speaking along the same lines, Kruger explains that he prefers not to label his newest film as a remake of the original because it actually expands on the foundational aspects of the initial movie and carries forward some plot threads, giving off a stronger sense of a sequel rather than a simple retelling.
“Street Trash is old-school, yet I adore it because I grew up watching it. However, I wouldn’t want to modernize it, as it’s a significant piece of my past. If I were to replicate it exactly, it would be unoriginal and dull. Many sequels simply copy their originals, and I find that repetitive.
From Cineverse, Street Trash is now available on digital.
