New ‘Star Trek’ Short ‘765874 Unification’ Celebrates 30th Anniversary with William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy

As a lifelong Trekkie who has spent countless hours navigating the final frontier and pondering the mysteries of the universe, I can confidently say that “765874 – Unification” is an absolute must-watch for any dedicated fan. The short film offers a tantalizing glimpse into what could have been for Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, and it’s a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Star Trek.

In a delightful twist, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock are given a satisfying resolution in a short film that commemorates the 30th anniversary of Star Trek Generations. Titled “765874 – Unification,” this ten-minute movie offers fans an intriguing alternate scenario, where Kirk explores the Nexus. The production seamlessly blends live-action footage with computer-generated imagery. Notably, both Shatner and Susan Bay (widow of Leonard Nimoy) were involved as producers in the creation of this film, which was released by the Roddenberry Archive and OTOY.

For instance, Gary Mitchell, who was only seen as Kirk’s friend in a single TOS episode, encounters Lt. Saavik (Robin Curtis), a character from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Interestingly, Curtis stepped into the role after Kirstie Alley initially portrayed the half-Vulcan, half-Romulan in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. However, it’ll interest Trekkies to know that 87-year-old Gary Lockwood actually reprises his role as Gary Mitchell in the short flick. Meanwhile, it’s Sam Witwer of Smallville and Star Wars fame portraying young Kirk and Lawrence Selleck playing Spock.

On Sunday, November 17th, a preliminary view was granted to Unification, while William Shatner was engaged in a Star Trek tour in Ticonderoga, New York. During his travels, the ex-commander of the starship Enterprise spoke about advancements in AI technology and how it enabled the portrayal of his character in Unification. As he put it on TrekMovie.com, “It makes you look significantly younger for a film, allowing you to appear 10, 20, 30, or even 50 years younger than your actual age.” Interestingly, three versions of Kirk were showcased throughout the short 10-minute clip, featuring the original series (TOS), Wrath of Khan, and Generations Kirk.

Personally, I’d be thrilled to step back into the shoes of my iconic Star Trek character, given the chance in a live-action setting. However, it would have to be more than just a brief cameo to make it worthwhile for me and the fans. During an interview with Global News while promoting my documentary, “You Can Call Me Bill,” I made it clear that I’m open to revisiting the beloved Star Trek universe under the right circumstances.

The concept is quite captivating… It’s tough to imagine it happening, but given the quality of the role and script, I would ponder over the possibility, especially if my character had a substantial purpose rather than just a brief appearance.

Unfortunately, Captain Kirk met his end in the film “Star Trek Generations” 30 years ago at the hands of the creative team led by producer Rick Berman and screenwriters Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore. However, their decision made the reunion of Kirk and Spock in “Unification” even more touching, as William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, who played these iconic characters, did not share a screen together again following “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country” (1991).
