As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for both virtual worlds and real-life cinematic experiences, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation upon learning about the upcoming Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. With Spike Lee at the helm of the main competition jury, I am confident that this year’s event will be nothing short of extraordinary.
Spike Lee has been appointed as the head of the primary judging panel for the fourth installment of the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF), which will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The festival has just revealed the 15 movies competing in its upcoming event running from December 5th to 14th. Among them are “Superboys of Malegaon” by Reema Kagti, which made its world debut at the Toronto Film Festival, and “Moon” by Kurdwin Ayub, which premiered at the Locarno Film Festival where it received the special jury prize.
Viola Davis and Mona Zaki, both renowned actors (known for Perfect Strangers, Flight 404, Aserb: The Squadron, and The Spider), have been announced to receive awards and grace the stage at RSIFF 2024. The festival is scheduled to kick off with Karim Shenawi’s The Tale of Daye’s Family, and will conclude with Better Man, a biopic of Robbie Williams directed by Michael Gracey.
As a devoted fan, I had the privilege of witnessing Baz Luhrmann, the brilliant mind behind films like “Elvis” and “Moulin Rouge,” serve as president of the jury for the features competition at last year’s Jeddah festival. The Yusr Award for best competition film was given to Zarrar Khan’s chilling horror masterpiece, “In Flames.” This Pakistani-Canadian production tells a haunting tale of a mother and daughter who struggle with loss, oppression, and vulnerability following the death of their family patriarch.
