As a dedicated fan of Badshah, I can’t help but be in absolute awe of his resilience and talent! The story of him remixing Humma Humma and receiving an apology from the legendary AR Rahman is nothing short of inspiring. It showcases not only Badshah’s unwavering conviction in his artistic vision but also the power of perseverance.
Badshah, a well-known Bollywood singer-rapper in the entertainment industry, is recognized as one of the top artists due to chart-topping songs like Genda Phool, Garmi, and Bad Boy, along with others. In a recent conversation, this rapper discussed his song Humma Humma from Ok Jaanu and shared that AR Rahman, the original and renowned singer of Humma Humma, had extended an apology to him for initially critiquing the remake of his classic tune.
In an interview with Radio Nasha, Badshah shared that he received much criticism when he remade Humma Humma. AR Rahman himself was not pleased at first. However, during an event, he recalled that AR Rahman called him and apologized, saying, “I’m sorry. I needed time to realize it’s a good song. My unhappiness had nothing to do with the quality of the song, but rather…” This moment, Badshah noted, was a significant validation, one he hadn’t sought out but still received.
The performer shared that he had a distinct idea about where the song was heading, referring to this aspect as the most rewarding step in the entire creation process.
As a committed devotee, I’d like to share my experience: I, myself, had a crystal-clear image in mind about how I intended to rework and recreate the song, infusing it with my unique “Badshah flair.” It was only in hindsight that others began to understand and admire my unwavering conviction.
Badshah, working together with Tanishk Bagchi, re-created the classic tune “Humma Humma” for the 2017 movie Ok Jaanu, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. The original rendition of this song, created by AR Rahman, was a part of Mani Ratnam’s 1995 film Bombay.
When the revamped Humma Humma came out for Ok Jaanu, AR Rahman openly voiced his displeasure about the reworked version. He clarified that he allowed the use of the song under constant persuasion from the movie’s director, Shaad Ali.
Beyond just Humma Humma, Badshah is known for reimagining famous Bollywood tunes, including Tamma Tamma Loge, Kala Chashma, and most recently, Morni Baga Ma Bole. Furthermore, his self-composed songs like Jugnu, Gone Girl, Paagal, Mercy, Bachpan Ka Pyaar, and numerous others have been extremely popular as well.
