As a seasoned gamer and music enthusiast with a penchant for unearthing hidden talents, I must say that the Miller Mix initiative is a breath of fresh air in the industry. Having traversed various virtual worlds and electronic dance music scenes in my gaming escapades, I’ve often wondered about the untapped potential lurking in underrepresented musical communities worldwide.
This year, Miller and Beatport are advocating for rising music stars by launching the Miller Mix – a fresh industry-backed initiative and event series. With many DJs and producers finding it tough to gain traction in the industry, this program seeks to equip local talent with the necessary resources and stage to leave their unique imprint on the music world.
As a gamer, I’ve embarked on an exciting global journey, reaching out to lesser-known music communities. Last July, I found myself in the vibrant heart of Turkey. More recently, my travels took me to Hungary and Kazakhstan. Here, I witnessed rising talent being equipped with new gear and attended specialized workshops. The cherry on top was getting a headline slot at each event, sharing the stage with local heavyweights and international stars like Lilly Palmer, Argy, Gioli & Assia, Shimza, and Armand Van Helden. It’s been an incredible experience, broadening my musical horizons!
Alongside offering chances to artists, Miller and Beatport have also been highlighting the host cities through a documentary series. This series features radio stations, club events, resident DJs, and local music labels in each city. Each brief film reveals the communities that drive the underground music scene in these six locations, aiming to preserve their distinctive cultural landscapes even after the initiative concludes.
In the second episode of the documentary series, we gather tales and melodies from the heart of Budapest. As Kata, one of the founders of Kommenzi, explains, “It’s a fusion of the Eastern and Central European musical cultures.” Through her club event titled “Come and Enjoy,” Kata leverages this distinctive genre to bring together people in a city teeming with talented artists, despite its relatively small size.
Showcasing local artist Peter Makto highlights a shift among Hungarian artists towards cultivating upcoming talents. Alongside fellow artist and mentor Hiboo, he has set up a new artistic complex. Moreover, Makto runs his own music school where he guides youngsters in the art of music production. To top it off, the episode concludes with Enicroa, an emerging star and winner of the Miller Mix competition, discussing her preparations for her debut headline concert before a large audience.
In episode 3 of the documentary series, Miller delves into the stop in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where the story unfolds around an innovative project, event, and local melodies. Although not widely recognized internationally, this six-minute film focuses on the city’s DJs, artists, and producers who blend traditional music with modern sounds to forge a distinct musical identity that Nazira, a techno DJ and Radio Cómeme host, describes as “nonconformist” and “rebellious.” As we explore various landmarks in Almaty, Nazira guides us through the city while Anndi, one of Miller Mix’s talents, discusses her plans to bring Almaty’s unique music to the global stage.
Simultaneously, Miller and Beatport prepare to make a grand entrance in Johannesburg this December, as they’ve revealed an upcoming event at the historic Old Park Station. The star-studded lineup includes Scorpion Kings, DBN Gogo, MÖRDA, Sun El Musician, Shimza, Oscar Mbo, and Shamiso, alongside Miller Mix’s selected artists. Moreover, additional events and Miller Mix documentaries are planned for Australia and Georgia in 2025.
