As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for immersive narratives, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement upon hearing about the rebranding of Ascent Studios to White Lightning Studios. With Robert Rippberger at the helm, backed by industry veterans like Kelly Lynn Reiter and Roger Goff, this studio seems poised to churn out some truly captivating content.
Long-time filmmaker Robert Rippberger recently revamped Ascent Studios, located in North Carolina, into a fresh venture called White Lightning Studios, bringing on board some new financial backers.
Rippberger’s latest investors for the company’s rebranding involve ex-National Football League star Jason Brown, who currently manages a food relief non-profit called First Fruit Farms and owns land adjacent to the film complex. Ascent Studios, which began construction in 2023 and is now operational, boasts six soundstages spread across 170,000 square feet and approximately 200 acres of land surrounding it.
Rippberger’s refreshed business endeavor is supported and financed by Kelly Lynn Reiter, a North Carolina native who’s known for her roles as a producer and actress (notably in “Deadlock,” “Laws of Man,” and “The Cut”), and Roger Goff, serving as the general counsel.
White Lightning Studios has its first feature film ready to go – titled “A Good Fight,” a touching comedy written by Pierce Gardner and set to be directed by Rippberger. This production is a collaboration with Justin Shaner and Fernando H. Rojas from Miami’s Sobe Brooke Studios. The story revolves around a thriving small-town businessman whose encounter with an overbearing college newspaper reporter takes an unexpected turn, significantly altering the course of both their lives.
In the year 2023, Renner was helmed by Rippberger as the main star Frankie Muniz spearheaded the sci-fi/thriller production in North Carolina. The movie is scheduled to hit the screens in early 2025.
In a statement, Rippberger pointed out that filmmakers are attracted to his studios located within the triangle areas of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill by North Carolina’s 25 percent tax rebate when producing film and TV projects.
You won’t find another place that offers such high production value combined with attractive state tax incentives,” he explained. “This is a team of skilled professionals who specialize in creating TV shows, movies, commercials, and music videos. And to top it off, they bring a touch of Southern hospitality.
More recently, Rippberger has been at the helm of the upcoming sci-fi/thriller “Renner,” starring Frankie Muniz, set for release in early 2025. Among his previous works are the horror/thriller “Those Who Walk Away,” led by Booboo Stewart; the drama “Strive,” featuring Danny Glover; and the documentary “How To Build a Truth Engine,” co-produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov, which made its world debut at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.
Rippberger is repped by Established Artists and Millennial PR.
