As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the digital worlds of various movies and their characters, I must say Michael Fassbender is undoubtedly one of my favorites. His journey from “Band of Brothers” to Magneto and beyond showcases his versatility and star power that even a flop like “The Snowman” can’t diminish.
Michael Fassbender portrayed a soldier in “Band of Brothers.” He masterfully depicted Magneto’s intricate supervillain persona in the finale of “X-Men: First Class” and subsequent X-Men films. Even his less successful ventures, like the crime thriller “The Snowman,” have garnered attention on streaming platforms such as Netflix. This underscores his cinematic prowess, a talent that was apparent from the early stages of his acting career. Although he had impressive roles in movies like Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” by 2011, it was that year when he truly made a significant impact with his breakthrough roles in “X-Men: First Class,” the psychotherapist drama “A Dangerous Method,” and notably, “Shame,” which garnered him multiple awards and nominations.
Beyond its status as a film, “Shame” is particularly recognized for including a full-frontal nude scene featuring Michael Fassbender, which is uncommon among actors of his stature. Interestingly, this scarcity was one factor that motivated him to take on the scene. Additionally, his motivation was also influenced by… his mother.
Typically, an actor might find it uncomfortable or awkward to talk about filming nude scenes with their parents. However, Michael Fassbender seems to be an exception. If his 2011 interview with Vulture is any guide, he chose to do the nude scene in “Shame” because of his mother’s frequent complaints about the lack of such moments in movies. He explained, “I can’t believe it: Women can show themselves freely, but men are always fully clothed. My mom used to complain about this to me, saying, ‘This is ridiculous, it’s always the women who are naked.’ … So I did this one for you, Mom!
Fassbender’s father was proud of his Shame scene
As a gamer, I’d say: Though I agreed to bare all in “Shame,” I was relieved I didn’t have to linger over filming that scene. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2012, I described the process as swift, having wrapped up the movie in just 25 days. So, I had to push past any discomfort and keep going. Fun fact: even my father watched it at the Venice Film Festival and was incredibly proud of me!
Michael Fassbender didn’t reveal the specific advice his mother gave about his nude scenes in “Shame,” but he did specify who he would bring to the Academy Awards if nominated – his mom. He explained, “It would be an added bonus, but I would certainly take my mom down the red carpet.” Although he wasn’t nominated for “Shame,” Fassbender fulfilled his promise when he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “12 Years a Slave” in 2014.
