As a dedicated supporter, I’ve been reflecting on the persistent concern surrounding the ‘casting couch’ issue within Bollywood, a matter that has sparked numerous queries about women’s safety on film sets. Notably, filmmaker Imtiaz Khan, renowned for his honesty, has recently expressed his thoughts on this subject. He emphasized that when a woman values her dignity above all else, others naturally recognize and respect that too.
Initially, Imtiaz Ali entered the director’s role with the 2005 film Socha Na Tha. Since then, he has produced numerous hit films. Drawing from his extensive experience, he tackled the topic of the casting couch in Bollywood during a seminar at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
He shared that there is a common perception that composing views or giving up on self-respect is a way to success in showbiz. But, he noted that it’s a wrong belief and a troubling societal perception.
With his two decades of directing experience behind him, the filmmaker stated, “A young actress enters, clearly frightened, and feels the pressure to yield. I want to clarify that just because a woman or girl can’t assert ‘no,’ it doesn’t automatically boost her chances of success. It’s not as if a young actress who concedes will undoubtedly land a role.
Ali emphasized that self-respect is crucial and asserting a firm ‘no’ in such instances significantly impacts how others view that individual within the industry. He clarified, “A woman who can stand up for herself by saying ‘no’ and valuing herself will also gain respect from others. We often consider whether we take someone seriously or not; showing respect towards an individual is essential to be taken seriously ourselves.
In the same vein, the director of Jab We Met pointed out that it’s uncertain if making concessions will enhance success in Bollywood. However, frequent compromises can potentially have significant long-term impacts on a career, since at some point, one might be sacrificing their professional path.
Following his first directorial venture in 2005, he’s since produced a string of successful movies at the box office, such as Jab We Met, Tamasha (twice), Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, and others. He is recognized for crafting films with captivating narratives, most recently directing the movie “Amar Singh Chamkila,” starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
