Lil Nas X Drops Honest New Track “Need Dat Boy”

As a gamer who’s been through countless virtual worlds and battles, I can relate to Lil Nas X’s lyrics in “Need Dat Boy.” Life isn’t always a smooth ride, filled with victories and level-ups; sometimes you’re down in the dungeons, dealing with the monsters of reality. His honesty about his struggles resonates deeply, and the somber beginnings of the song are reminiscent of those late-night quests when all seems lost.

Last week, Lil Nas X initiated the launch of his upcoming album titled “Dreamboy” by releasing its first single, “Light Again.” This past Friday, the artist unveiled an additional song from the project, entitled “Need Dat Boy,” where he offers a candid look into his life and career while rapping over a piano-based melody.

He croons, “Sorry love, I’ve been struggling for a couple of summers, finding myself back among the group, smoking marijuana.” He expresses feelings of frustration and pain, stating that he’s tried to improve but things aren’t working out. Despite his dreams being grand, he seems to be losing hope, unsure about what he truly believes in these days.

Although the tune initially starts off with a melancholic vibe, it gradually becomes more lively as Lil Nas incorporates Trina’s 2000 hit “Pull Over” towards the closing moments. In the post-chorus, he croons, “I think I adore that guy/I think I want to be with him/Climb on that man,” suggesting a change in mood and lyrics.

Lil Nas X hasn’t specified an exact release date for “Dreamboy,” but he recently shared some insights about what listeners can anticipate on this upcoming project through X: “Dreamboy isn’t merely an album; it’s my way of dealing with the loss of the past and striving for a new reality. I’m thrilled to take you along on this journey.” This forthcoming album serves as the sequel to his debut LP, “Montero,” which dropped in 2021.
