Miley Cyrus Reveals Godmother Dolly Parton’s Response to “Used to Be Young”: “I’m Like 80. That Should Have Been My Song”

As a fan who has grown with Miley Cyrus and her music since the Hannah Montana days, it’s fascinating to see how her journey continues to evolve. The recent revelation about Dolly Parton’s reaction to “Used to Be Young” is a testament to their unique bond and the timeless wisdom that comes with age. It seems like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as both women share a similar knack for being honest, authentic, and unapologetically themselves.

Dolly Parton has some issues with Miley Cyrus’ 2023 song “Used to Be Young.”

Cyrus shared the response of her godmother regarding the recent feature in Harper’s Bazaar magazine, during which Parton expressed doubts about the suitability of the song’s lyrics for Cyrus given her youth and striking appearance.

“She goes, ‘I don’t know if I like that new ‘Used to Be Young’ song because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful.’ She said, ‘And here I am — I’m like 80 — and I’m like, That should have been my song!’” Cyrus recalled.

On “Used to Be Young,” which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Cyrus sings about her past and how she has evolved since her wilder days. Looking back on the song’s release, Cyrus mentioned that the person she is now might not have released this song at all.

“I actually listened to that song yesterday, and I was asking myself, ‘Did I really need to put this out?’ It was one of those things that maybe now that I’m a bit more private, I would’ve kept private, but I’m happy to have shared it,” she said about the track, which was released in August 2023 on Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation album.

“It just feels like a song that’s so personal that it’s hard for people to relate,” she added.

In another part of the conversation, Cyrus expressed solidarity with musician Chappell Roan, who’s been vocal about setting limits with her fans. Cyrus hoped that people would be understanding towards Roan and not cause her any trouble.

Cyrus mentioned that it might be quite challenging for newcomers in the field of phones and social media, given that these weren’t significant aspects of her past, and they aren’t part of her life presently either; she doesn’t even know her Instagram password.

Since the 2000s, Roan has been an avid supporter of Cyrus. The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer went to Cyrus’ Best of Both Worlds Tour in 2007, which happened to be Roan’s first concert. Moreover, Roan was one of those who honored Cyrus during the Disney Legends ceremony in August.

Roan appreciates Miley Cyrus for her ability to reinvent herself consistently and her dedication to her work. Unlike many artists, Miley’s transformations, both artistically and personally, seem genuine rather than sudden or inauthentic. She remains true to herself and produces music that is authentic.
