As a longtime fan who has watched Dana Carvey grace our screens since his iconic days on Saturday Night Live, it’s both heartwarming and amusing to see him back in action, albeit with a bit of a stumble here and there. His impression of Elon Musk might not be spot-on, but let’s face it, no one can truly capture the enigma that is Musk in all his complexity.
During a recent episode of his “Superfly” podcast, which he co-hosts with his former “Saturday Night Live” colleague David Spade, Dana Carvey openly acknowledged that his Elon Musk impression could use some refinement.
As a fan, I must admit, I struggle to perfectly emulate Elon Musk’s unique persona. However, I can certainly attempt something distinctive, unlike anything else. His accent is truly remarkable, a fusion of South African roots, Canadian upbringing, and a hint of Pennsylvania-born charm. There’s also a touch of the Australian twang and British inflection, yet he remains uniquely himself, not entirely fitting any one of these descriptions.
Following Musk’s criticism of my portrayal and SNL as a whole, I’ve taken it upon myself, as a devoted fan, to express my thoughts. This came after SNL’s November 9th cold open, where they sarcastically attempted to curry favor with the potential 2024 Republican president-elect, Donald Trump, in response to his election win.
The part featured a guest spot by Carvey portraying Musk, donning his “dark Make America Great Again” cap, rejoicing over Trump’s triumph.
When asked about Dana Carvey’s impression of him, Musk replied, ‘Dana Carvey simply sounds like Dana Carvey.’
Musk went on to bash the show, which he hosted in 2021, in general.
For quite some time now, SNL seems to be losing its relevance, as it appears less connected with the real world,” Musk posted.
He added, “They are so mad that @realDonaldTrump won.”
Carvey, who came back to the variety show this autumn following his stint as a cast member from 1986-1993, mentioned that he will reappear on SNL in December as well.
The upcoming new episode of the show will be broadcast on December 7, starring Paul Mescal as host and Shaboozey as the musical guest. Previously, Carvey was seen on the episode of the show that aired on November 16, where he portrayed Biden in a cold open that satirically depicted the president’s meeting with Trump in the Oval Office earlier in the week.
And Carvey indicated that when he returns, he might have more of a spring in his step, literally.
When someone like Dana Carvey exits the SNL stage with a host, they often disappear behind the bleachers and then reappear. It’s my guess that it was John Mulaney who preceded me in such an instance. He seemed to be leaving, and then he began to skip. This action inspired me too, as skipping is far more enjoyable than walking or running. It has a certain gentleness to it. So, if you ever see me on SNL again, which will be in December, just bear in mind that moments after I leave the stage, I’ll likely be skipping for quite some time. That’s a little bit of insider knowledge.
