As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of many comedic gems, I must confess that ‘A.P. Bio’ has managed to worm its way into my heart. Having followed Glenn Howerton’s career since his days as Dennis Reynolds in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, I was eager to see what he would bring to the table with this new project.
In a different setting, Dennis Reynolds enters a school, and instead of Thor’s hammer causing chaos, it’s the witty humor that Glenn Howerton brings in his small-town school comedy, “A.P. Bio.” This story revolves around a resentful author compelled to teach at his hometown school, and it shares a resemblance with Howerton’s character from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Although viewers might have overlooked the amusing office comedy featuring one of the bar owners in Philadelphia during its original broadcast, Netflix provides another opportunity with the show’s debut on streaming. So far, fans are delighted with this new offering.
In this comedy series A.P. Bio, Glenn Howerton plays Jack Griffin, a once-respected Harvard professor who’s fallen from grace due to a rivalry with Miles Leonard, who took over his position. Forced back to his small-town roots, he becomes the teacher of an advanced placement class, seething as their mentor. With a classroom full of promising young minds at his disposal, Jack hatches a plan to get revenge on Miles and regain his lost prestige.

Glenn Howerton portrays the character Jack, who is marked by chaos and evil, yet his selfishness, bitterness, deceitfulness, and self-righteous anger fueled by arrogance are irresistibly endearing. This delicate balance is masterfully achieved by Howerton in his 16 (and counting) seasons on It’s Always Sunny, where he plays the psychopathically self-centered Dennis Reynolds. However, unlike Dennis in Always Sunny who interacts with other main characters who share similar flaws, Jack from A.P. Bio is a dominant presence corrupting a smaller environment.
Jack, in this portrayal, embodies a family-friendly version of Dennis Reynolds’ intense determination and mid-rant outbursts. His tactics, using students as pawns in his personal feud with Miles, display Dennis Reynolds’ characteristic reckless disregard, even within the constraints of network television’s more modest standards.
Completing the ensemble is a delightful mix of actors that serve as an ideal counterbalance to Jack’s intense energy. There’s the always-energetic principal, trying tirelessly to earn Jack’s favor, and the group of three chatty teachers who somehow find themselves drawn into Jack’s circle. The characters surrounding Jack each bring their own brand of chaos, yet they all skillfully maintain a balance with Jack without being overpowered by him.
Instead, let me rephrase this in a simpler way: The most captivating moment of the show is when Jack interacts with his students, who initially seem to want to undermine Miles. These characters have a strong bond and unique personalities that remain consistent for the most part. There’s often tension between Jack and the class, but it also provides viewers with intriguing insights into Jack’s character development across the series.
‘A.P. Bio’ Had a Shaky Start, But the Following Seasons Get Better
Television show “A.P. Bio” initially ran for two seasons on NBC before its cancellation in 2019. Subsequently, it was revived on NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock, and continued for another two seasons until being canceled again in 2021. Despite a rocky start with critical reception during the first season (earning a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the subsequent seasons saw significant improvement, receiving a perfect 100% from critics (with limited reviews available at that time).
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my thoughts on this captivating series that had audiences hooked. This show was hailed as hilarious, smart, even underrated by fans! One critic described it as a ‘satisfying blend of absurd and wholesome’, while some mused if the show wasn’t quite living up to its ‘Always Sunny’ counterpart comparisons. Glenn Howerton, who many followed from his ‘Always Sunny’ role, was undeniably the main attraction. Fans delighted in the similarities between his character Dennis and Jack. Yet, some admitted that without Howerton gracing our screens, their interest in the series might have dwindled.
It’s fantastic news that the show A.P. Bio has managed to attract a new fan base! As it currently stands, the series is ranked #2 among Netflix’s most-watched streaming shows. The entire collection of episodes made its debut on Netflix on November 15, giving subscribers the chance to immerse themselves in all the episodes. In addition to Howerton, the show features Patton Oswalt as the endearing and enthusiastic Principal Durbin. Paula Pell, known for her roles in 30 Rock and Bless the Harts, plays his committed assistant. The faculty staff is made up of Lyric Lewis, Mary Sohn, and Jean Villepique. Also starring are Tom Bennett, Aparna Brielle, Brad Morris, and Spence Moore II. Now, you can stream all four seasons of A.P. Bio on Netflix and Peacock.
