As a seasoned cinephile with decades of moviegoing experiences under my belt, I must say that I find myself torn between two worlds when it comes to the recent controversy surrounding audience participation during musical films like ‘Wicked’. On one hand, I understand Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s enthusiasm for letting loose and singing along to our favorite tunes. After all, who doesn’t love belting out a show-stopping number in the privacy of their own home? But on the other hand, as someone who has had the misfortune of sitting next to a few off-key singers during my fair share of cinematic experiences, I can’t help but side with AMC and their plea for a shared, peaceful moviegoing experience.
Recently, it’s been discussed that spectators at the initial showings of “Wicked” have disturbed the movie by harmonizing with its numerous songs. This has sparked heated debates online about whether this behavior is acceptable, with most people agreeing that a cinema isn’t the venue for a sing-along. However, Moana 2‘s star, Dwayne Johnson, has entered the conversation and, unsurprisingly, he supports joining in with your favorite tunes, regardless of one’s vocal skills.
During the UK debut of Moana 2, Johnson was questioned by BBC on the red carpet about whether it’s appropriate to sing in theaters. With musical numbers like those in Wicked and Disney’s sequel, one might expect some audience participation. For Johnson, he expressed that if people have paid for a movie ticket, they should be allowed to enjoy themselves a bit, even at the expense of others who are there mainly to watch the film without any unexpected karaoke sessions.
Enjoy the show! After purchasing your ticket with your earned money, finding yourself in a musical is no small feat. Immerse yourself in it. And if you have a passion for music, that’s what makes it truly enjoyable – so go ahead and sing along!
“For those watching Wicked, we kindly ask that you don’t sing during the film.” Some have suggested that theaters should host special “sing-along” screenings for this film, but as of now, there’s no confirmation if that will take place.
Instead of Singing, People Are Taking Pictures During ‘Wicked’
Instead of just humming along during the theater performance of Wicked on Saturday, user @nat_dwbua_ sparked a conversation on social media encouraging others to share their own photos from the movie. This resulted in numerous posts displaying images from the film, with many people showing the opening title screen, but some even captured scenes from other parts of the movie as well.
@dogwood_maple” expressed, “String of the most inconsiderate individuals globally,” and we concur. Although singing may have leniency in some instances, such as with the musical Wicked, pulling out your phone during a movie, regardless of its content, is simply poor etiquette. MovieWeb discussed the reemergence of this etiquette debate earlier this year, finding that most people still view using mobile devices during a film as unacceptable and detrimental to the overall viewing experience for all.
So, while Johnson might be in favor of singing along to Wicked’s musical numbers, if you’re one of the ones that agree with him, don’t be surprised to get some push back from others that are there to hear Ariana Grande, and not your out of tune version of “Popular.” If you want to sing, wait to do it at home, or – like others have suggested – ask your local theater to have special screenings just for you and your theater-kid buddies.
