Keira Knightley Explains Why She Won’t Return To Movie Franchises After Starring in ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’

As a long-time fan of Keira Knightley, I must say her evolution as an artist and a mother is truly inspiring. From her breakout role in “Pirates of the Caribbean” to her recent commitments, she’s proven time and again that she’s not just a pretty face, but a talented actress with a strong sense of self.

Keira Knightley’s celebrity status skyrocketed after being part of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, yet she shows no inclination towards going back to that lifestyle.

In a recent interview with the U.K.’s Times, published on Saturday, the actress who played in several Pirates films from 2003 to 2007, explained why she’s not interested in joining another multi-film project. Since welcoming her two daughters, Edie and Delilah, into her life with her husband James Righton, Knightley has grown more selective about the roles she chooses for her career.

Knightley stated that she can’t travel for jobs overseas at the moment. She feels it wouldn’t be right or something she wants to do, given her choice to raise a family. So, she has had to significantly reduce her work commitments.

Later, Knightley reminisced about her time working on the “Pirates” films, where she played Elizabeth Swann. She attributes the successful film series to establishing her as a familiar face in many homes, yet she also points out the popularity of the franchise as the cause for her facing public criticism.

It’s quite peculiar, really,” Knightley remarked about the franchise involving Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. “On one hand, it caused me immense struggle; on the other, it propelled me to greater heights. I was often criticized because of them, but their success paved the way for me to star in films that earned me Oscar nominations. They were the most successful projects I’ve ever been involved with, yet they also led to my public downfall. So they occupy a complex space in my mind.

The experience was so jarring that Knightley has no interest in returning to movie franchises: “The hours are insane. It’s years of your life, you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, what you’re filming.”

Although another movie franchise is off the table, Knightley will soon be seen in the upcoming Netflix thriller series titled “Black Doves,” where she portrays a British spy embroiled in a dangerous love story. The Academy Award nominee has expressed her interest in taking on roles that provide “pure entertainment” now.

Over the last few years, I’ve been quite taken aback by the things I’ve chosen not to accept,” Knightley shared with The Times. “Perhaps I’ve sought more light-hearted entertainment due to my personal requirements. I’m frequently presented with roles involving children or mothers in distress, but I’m unable to take them up.

Black Doves will be available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 5.
