'Quiet on Set' Subject Dan Schneider Receives Green Light in Defamation Suit

As a cinephile with decades of industry experience under my belt, I must say that the ongoing saga between Dan Schneider and the producers of “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is as gripping as any blockbuster film. Having worked in the trenches of Hollywood myself, I can empathize with both sides to a certain extent – while it’s crucial for documentaries like this to expose problematic behavior, it’s equally important that creators’ reputations aren’t unfairly tarnished when they’ve never been accused of heinous acts.

Famed Hollywood producer Dan Schneider has scored a legal victory in his lawsuit against Warner Bros. and Sony. On Friday, Judge Ashfaq G. Chowdhury ruled that Schneider, whose behavior while working at Nickelodeon is explored in the Investigation Discovery and Max docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, can move forward with a defamation lawsuit filed in May. In his suit, Schneider says the docuseries was a “hit job” that alleged he was a child sexual abuser.

In the case of Schneider, Judge Chowdhury decided in his favor as it was deemed reasonable to infer that the docuseries suggests negative connotations about his actions. Additionally, a motion submitted by Warner Bros. and Sony to dismiss Schneider’s defamation lawsuit was denied by the Judge. This was due to the fact that the series Quiet on Set did not accuse Schneider of sexual abuse. The four-part investigative piece, aired in March, delves into questionable and harmful behavior among adults associated with Nickelodeon shows during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Allegations made by series stars and staff involve sexual misconduct and aggressive and sexist behavior.

As a follower, I’d express it like this: “In my view, the show ‘Quiet on Set’ unveils the intricate empire constructed by Dan Schneider, a figure who significantly influenced pop culture. However, it’s important to note that no one in the series accuses him of sexual assault. Yet, some interviewees do highlight a toxic work environment. Moreover, two individuals featured in the documentary, Jason Handy and Brian Peck, have been convicted as sex offenders.

According to Schneider, the filming practice known as ‘Quiet on Set’ has caused him substantial emotional and financial distress, and he is looking for undisclosed compensation in return.

Dan Schneider Admits He Was “A Bad Leader,” but Never Involved in “Heinous Acts”

After the premiere of “Quiet on the Set,” Schneider openly conveyed remorse for his past behaviors during a video chat with Bobbie K. Bowman, an actor. Schneider confessed that watching the documentary was tough and awkward, and he acknowledged the importance of offering apologies to those he had hurt. In a subsequent statement, Schneider publicly stated:

I acknowledge that on certain occasions, my leadership skills fell short. I am genuinely sorry and remorseful for these lapses, and I remain accountable for them. However, it’s important to clarify that accusations beyond the truth, suggesting I was involved in or aided hideous crimes such as those perpetrated by convicted child predators, are unfounded and misleading. While I have no issue with my flaws as a leader being brought to light, it is unfair and inaccurate to tarnish my reputation by associating me with such heinous acts.

Schneider began his career as an actor (notably in Head of the Class) but is best known for his work behind the scenes. As the founder and co-president of the production banner Schneider’s Bakery, Schneider created or worked on several of Nickelodeon’s most popular shows, including Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, and Sam & Cat. In 2018, Nickelodeon and Schneider parted ways following a misconduct investigation into Schneider’s behavior.

Approximately two weeks following Schneider’s lawsuit against Warner Bros. and Sony, former “All That” star Lori Beth Denberg further tarnished his reputation. Denberg, who was part of the sketch comedy series from 1994 to 1998, alleged that Schneider displayed explicit material in his office when she was 19, engaged her in explicit phone conversations, touched her breasts without consent, and verbally harassed her, both on and off set. Schneider has refuted these allegations, labeling them as “exaggerated” and, in many instances, untrue.

Quiet on Set is available to stream on Max.
