As a long-time fan of DC comics and films, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon hearing about the upcoming live-action series for Amanda Waller. Having witnessed Viola Davis bring this formidable character to life in ‘The Suicide Squad’, I am eagerly anticipating seeing more of her brutal yet methodical portrayal.
As James Gunn readies the DC Universe for launch with “Creature Commandos” in December, followed by “Superman” in July and numerous other projects, there’s an exciting development for one of DC Studios’ previously overlooked shows. The upcoming “Creature Commandos” will introduce Viola Davis’ formidable character, Amanda Waller, into the revamped cinematic universe, a spin-off from the old DCEU. It has been confirmed that Waller will feature in several forthcoming projects and is rumored to appear in Season 2 of “Peacemaker.” However, Gunn has already announced plans for her own standalone series.
In a chat with Screen Rant, Steve Agee, who stars in Creature Commandos, shared some exciting news about the live-action Waller series: “From what I gather, they’re still working on the scripts.” Agee played John Economos in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Season 1 of Peacemaker, and he will reprise his role in Creature Commandos. Given that Economos had a close working relationship with Waller in Task Force X, there’s a strong possibility that he will appear in the live-action Waller series as well.
Since its initial announcement in early 2023, this is the first piece of news fans of the Waller series have received. Unfortunately, amidst the flood of updates about the “Gods & Monsters” phase from James Gunn and DC Studios, the show got overshadowed and essentially forgotten. Although we now have some information, there’s still no clear timeline set for the release of the Waller series. Agee added:
James Gunn hasn’t set a specific date just yet, as he wants to ensure the scripts are perfect before starting production. When they’re ready, I’m certain he’ll reveal when filming will commence – being an eager actor, I can hardly wait!
A ‘Waller’ Series Could Be Perfect for the DCU
As a cinephile, I must say that unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with its consistent, lighter tone, or Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe (DCEU) that seemed to mold every superhero into brooding, edgy figures (looking back, the DCEU might not have been as brilliant as initially thought), the upcoming DC Universe by Gunn and Safran doesn’t seem to adhere to a single style. The forthcoming lineup of movies and series boasts an assortment of diverse characters and filmmakers, each bringing their unique flair to their respective projects. For instance, James Gunn’s take on Superman will be starkly different from the upcoming Swamp Thing horror movie.
In contrast to Gunn’s DCU focusing on the more fantastical characters, Amanda Waller brings a sense of reality to the universe. Though she was portrayed as a villain in ‘The Suicide Squad’, her ruthless and calculated approach was overshadowed by the film’s comedic elements. A standalone series, especially one produced by HBO, could bring out Waller’s gritty personality more clearly.
Enthusiasts should feel even more thrilled about the upcoming series, Waller, after the phenomenal success of The Penguin. The acclaimed HBO show (based within Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe) delivered a gritty and violent tale that perfectly suits the tone of Waller. Not much is disclosed about this series. However, it is anticipated (though not yet confirmed) that Viola Davis will reprise her role for the show. The Academy Award-winning actress is already set to appear in the DCU’s Creature Commandos, and given her prominence within DC Comics history, she is likely to play a significant part in the forthcoming DC Universe.
