As a gamer who’s been through the original Karate Kid trilogy, The Next Karate Kid, and now, the phenomenal Cobra Kai spinoff, I can confidently say that this journey has been nothing short of a martial arts masterclass. The sixth and final season, split into three parts, has been an emotional rollercoaster, with our favorite Miyagi-Do fighters battling it out in the global Sekai Taikai tournament against Cobra Kai and The Iron Dragons.
The following is going to get into spoilers for the ongoing final season of Cobra Kai, so you might want to stop reading if you haven’t caught up on the Karate Kid spinoff show, available with a Netflix subscription.
From the start, we were aware that the sixth and last season of Cobra Kai would be divided into three parts. As of now, we can enjoy the first two parts, which contain a total of 10 episodes. In these episodes, the Miyagi-Do fighters have journeyed to Barcelona for the global Sekai Taikai tournament. This puts them up against their old rivals from Cobra Kai, as well as new opponents from The Iron Dragons. Simultaneously, both children and adults are dealing with various personal struggles.
In a less publicized manner, the series Cobra Kai honored one of its long-standing stars. Since the inception of The Karate Kid franchise, Ralph Macchio has embodied Daniel LaRusso. In episode 3 of Cobra Kai Season 6, Macchio swapped his acting role for a director’s chair, offering him a unique chance to acknowledge those who paved the way before him. During an interview about his contributions to Season 6, I inquired about Macchio’s directing experience and the impact of John G. Avildsen, the original Karate Kid director (who was also known for directing Rocky with Sylvester Stallone). And Macchio shared these insights with TopMob.
In that first episode, you might have noticed a nod to old-school boxing, specifically inspired by Rocky and other films directed by Avildsen. I subtly incorporated some of his signature camera techniques and paid homage to the movies he created. Look closely, and you’ll see hints of it scattered throughout. For instance, in our boxing gym, you might spot Spider Rico’s name on the wall – a fighter that Balboa squared off against. This series is deeply influenced by Rocky, and if John were here today, he’d be thrilled with how we captured the Sekai Taikai in part two. I like to think that Pat (Morita), Jerry Weintraub, and John are still with us, guiding us through their wisdom and legacy.
It’s delightful to learn that Ralph Macchio maintains the legacy of the great storytellers who preceded him, as he concludes the tale of Cobra Kai. Originally created as a witty take on the original Karate Kid, the series has evolved into a production that resonates with a contemporary audience, impacting the lives of the young performers involved and paving the way for additional stories within the Karate Kid narrative universe.
In the summer of 2025, Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, who starred in a popular remake of The Karate Kid, will team up for a movie that promises to update the lore of this franchise by modernizing its mythology. Additionally, the creators of Cobra Kai have expressed their intentions to delve into the past of Mr. Miyagi in a way that respects the work of Pat Morita. It seems that despite Cobra Kai coming to an end, the tales set in the universe of The Karate Kid are far from over.
