Per the terms of the agreement, Manson is set to cover approximately $327,000 in legal expenses for the Westworld actor, as stated in documents submitted in court this past month.
The heart of the controversy revolved around accusations that Wood and her companion Illma Gore deceitfully misled potential accusers to speak up about sexual assault allegations against the musician. This was done by suggesting, among other things, that he had filmed the abuse of a minor in a 1996 short film titled “Groupie.
In 2021, Brian Warner, also known as Manson, filed a lawsuit against two individuals prior to the release of an HBO documentary titled “Phoenix Rising“. This documentary delves into sexual assault allegations against Manson and the efforts of Wood to pass legislation extending California’s statute of limitations for domestic violence cases. He claimed that these individuals had recruited and coerced women to make simultaneous accusations of rape and abuse against Warner, aiming to boost Wood’s career. The lawsuit states that Gore persuaded these accusers by telling them false stories such as the actress in “Groupie” was underage during filming, had passed away, and that Warner would face indictment if the video were released, according to the complaint.
Previously, the court discarded defamation accusations directed at Wood due to a law permitting swift dismissal of cases stemming from free speech. The court determined that Manson failed to provide evidence showing either Wood agreed with Gore’s supposedly slanderous remarks or was cognizant of Gore’s intention to tarnish the musician’s reputation.
Earlier this year, Manson attempted to resolve the lawsuit by offering to cover part of Woods’ legal expenses, while maintaining the details of the settlement as private and having Woods issue a mutually acceptable public statement. Howard King, one of Manson’s lawyers, stated that following four years of openly expressing the truth, Brian is content to drop any remaining unresolved cases and appeals, effectively bringing an end to this particular phase in his life.
Michael Kump, a legal representative for Wood, referred to the lawsuit as a “strategy designed to generate publicity, aimed at discrediting multiple accusers and reviving a waning career.” He further explained that “the trial court rightly determined that Warner’s allegations were baseless. The fact that Warner has now dismissed his case and paid Wood her entire award of approximately $327,000 serves to reinforce this assessment.
