As a movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the Farrelly Brothers have done it again with their latest Christmas comedy, “Dear Santa.” Having grown up watching their iconic films like “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary,” I was eager to see what they would bring to the table this time around.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’ve eagerly awaited the arrival of Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s Christmas comedy gem, “Dear Santa,” featuring the talented Jack Black. After a decade-long cinematic journey, this heartwarming tale has finally made its way to our screens.
Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett, our frequent collaborators, introduced an intriguing concept: a child accidentally writes a letter to Satan instead of Santa. Upon hearing this, we immediately agreed to move forward with the project, likening it to the ‘Snakes on a Plane’ pitch. However, what we didn’t anticipate was the complexity that came with it. This project has been in development for ten years due to its delicate balance. It requires the perfect portrayal of Satan, which is fulfilled by Jack Black, and the right tone, while maintaining a PG-13 rating. As Peter explained, it’s been quite a challenge.
Bobby pointed out that while the story centers on the devil, this film isn’t categorized as a horror movie.
Absolutely, the narrative is centered around Christmas, which meant avoiding any horror elements or dark themes. Instead, we aimed for plenty of humor, warmth, and an inspiring message throughout the story.
The Farrelly Brothers’ Future Could Involve More ‘Dumb & Dumber’
The Farrelly Brothers, famous for movies like “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary,” as well as independent films such as “Green Book” and “Champions,” are reuniting with actor Black, whom they worked with in their 2001 film “Shallow Hal.” Bobby Farrelly directed the movie titled “Dear Santa,” while Peter Farrelly collaborated on the script with Ricky Blitt. In this film, Black, Smith, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Keegan-Michael Key, and Post Malone appear as stars. Jones and Barnett serve as executive producers for the project.
The brothers have multiple upcoming ventures, including possibly a third “Dumb and Dumber” film, as Peter hints at the possibility of him and his brother reprising their roles at some point. Contrary to expectations, “Dear Santa” is not a horror movie despite its eerie storyline; however, this genre is one they hope to explore in the future. When asked about trying new genres, Peter mentioned that one they’d be keen on attempting is horror.
“Absolutely: Horror. I want to do a horror movie that’s going to scare the hell out of people someday, but we don’t plan. We’re not good planners. That’s why we were horrible students in school. So we kind of do what the universe drops in our lap.”
You can stream the movie “Dear Santa” on Paramount+, or buy it digitally through platforms such as Google Play and Apple TV.
