As a long-time movie buff with a soft spot for classic films and modern TV shows that pay homage to them, I can’t help but feel thrilled by the revelation that Ted Lasso is deeply rooted in The Wizard of Oz. Brett Goldstein, the actor, and writer who has been instrumental in the show’s success, has confirmed this connection, and it’s a delight to see such a beloved series drawing inspiration from one of Hollywood’s most cherished classics.
One of today’s most cherished television series, Ted Lasso, draws significant inspiration from the timeless movie masterpiece, The Wizard of Oz (1939), as confirmed by Brett Goldstein, one of its stars and main writers. Just like the ongoing musical Wicked by Jon M. Chu, inspired by the play based on the original classic, is filling theaters with song and, regrettably, flash photography, Goldstein discloses that the Apple TV+ comedy is brimming with references to The Wizard of Oz. This aligns with a widely-discussed fan theory online about the link between the sitcom and the film by Victor Fleming.
In the series, Ted Lasso is a coach from America who is unexpectedly recruited to manage a British soccer team. Despite his lack of knowledge about the sport, Lasso’s positive vibe and resilient character encourage both the team members and those around them to strive for personal growth. The main cast includes Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Phil Dunster, and Brendan Hunt (Goldstein). Recently, Goldstein clarified this connection in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, and further shared some insights on the sources of inspiration that can be found throughout the show.
Indeed, you’ll notice numerous references to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in ‘Ted Lasso’. The pinball machine frequently flashes the message ‘There’s no place like home.’, and the same sentiment can be found in Richmond F.C., as they often say ‘There’s no place like home.’ This is a nod to ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
Is ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Happening?
Brett Goldstein explained that the characters in the series draw strong parallels with those from “The Wizard of Oz.” This intriguing perspective is noteworthy given the show’s exceptional character designs. As Goldstein pointed out, Roy Kent resembles the Tin Man, Ted mirrors Dorothy, Rebecca takes after the Lion, and Jamie embodies the Scarecrow.
In this story, I am the Tin Man, Ted is Dorothy, Rebecca embodies the Lion, while Jamie takes on the role of the Scarecrow. I can’t help but feel that our roles in this adventure might lead to quite a bit of turmoil.
In 2020, the joint production between Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. Television, Ted Lasso, was warmly received by critics. This streamer-released show had originated from a character featured in NBC’s ads for their Premier League coverage. Swiftly gaining popularity, it became the most viewed series on Apple TV+, and scooped numerous Emmy awards during its debut year. Spanning three seasons, the show concluded in 2023, leaving viewers stunned as the coach chose to depart from AFC Richmond and return to the United States.
It’s uncertain at this point, but there might be a fourth season of Ted Lasso in the works, although not with all its original cast members. We previously shared that showrunner Bill Lawrence stated that if the show resumes, it would depend solely on Jason Sudeikis’ decision. Given his pivotal role, Ted Lasso without Ted seems superfluous. Simultaneously, Goldstein and Apple TV+ are concentrating on their other comedy project, Shrinking, which has recently debuted its second season and received positive reviews.
