Marc Cherry, the brain behind Desperate Housewives, shares that he’s brimming with concepts for a sequel of this cherished series, and he’s got some intriguing plans up his sleeve to bring it to life.
Cherry hinted that he might consider reviving the series in a past era, as he estimates around 70,000 fans have asked him to do so. He misses writing for Wisteria Lane the most, as it was the most enjoyable playground any TV writer has ever had due to owning the entire street.
For eight seasons spanning from 2004 to 2012, the popular ABC series “Desperate Housewives” held its ground, earning numerous Emmy awards along the way. The show featured an impressive cast consisting of Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Eva Longoria. Set in a fictional town named Fairview within the state of Eagle, the series unfolded the compelling tales of Wisteria Lane, a street that became the centerpiece for drama and intrigue.
Cherry mentioned, “I’m very familiar with that street, almost as much as the back of my hand. When a commercial is filmed there, it immediately catches my attention because I recognize all the houses and understand its layout. It was an enjoyable location to work with. Sometimes, I even think to myself, ‘Why don’t I try writing Wisteria Lane in 1966?’
Cherry mentioned the challenge lies in determining whether there are more points to address – he’s mulling over a few suggestions.
He stated that a reboot should only be done for a strong artistic purpose. At some stage, I’ll discuss with someone whether the reasons are compelling enough to justify such an action.
It appears that Cherry has already reconnected with many members of the cast, as he mentioned he keeps in touch with them. He shared an encounter with Marcia when Eva Longoria received her star on the Walk of Fame, and recently had Felicity Huffman over for a visit. He also spoke about making plans with Brenda Strong and occasionally running into Doug Savant because his brother lives near him. Cherry expressed his affection for the cast, stating that whenever he meets one of them, it feels like no time has passed since they last saw each other.
Cherry expressed his admiration for his co-stars, commenting, “It doesn’t matter how fantastic the script is if it’s not delivered by the right actors. In some productions, I didn’t feel like I had the ideal cast, but in this particular project, fate seemed to be on my side – I struck gold.
Additionally, he humorously commented, “In hindsight, I hadn’t truly expected such a stunning cast. The most beautiful actresses consistently landed the roles… It seems so ludicrous now, but I was concerned that critics might mock me for assembling the most aesthetically pleasing neighborhood in TV history.
Cherry expressed his desire to revisit Wisteria Lane, as it holds valuable lessons from his initial experience there.
He reflected, “Ah, now I see why that worked or here’s my strategy for this.” He admitted that his success in the first season was more instinctive than analytical. If given another opportunity, he feels he would excel even more. He gained a wealth of knowledge from the experience.
