‘Desperate Housewives’ Prequel Series & Wisteria Lane as a Character Addressed by Creator Marc Cherry

As a devoted fan of Desperate Housewives, I must say that the prospect of revisiting Wisteria Lane in a prequel series set in the ’60s has me absolutely thrilled! The idea of Marc Cherry once again writing for the iconic street is like a dream come true. If there’s one character I’ve missed seeing on our screens more than any other, it’s Wisteria Lane itself – what a playground for storytelling it was!

It’s possible that a return to Wisteria Lane could be on the horizon, as series creator Marc Cherry has expressed interest in reviving the show. Following the 20th anniversary celebration last month, Cherry shared his desire to revisit the series by setting it during a different time period and having the opportunity to write a specific character once more.

As a movie reviewer, I can’t help but share my excitement about a potential project that could revisit the iconic world of “Desperate Housewives”. In an interview with People, the showrunner, Cherry, expressed his desire to create a prequel series set in the 1960s. He passionately explained, “I’d probably lean towards exploring the idea in an earlier decade. The character I miss writing for most is Wisteria Lane itself. It was an unparalleled playground for any television writer, as we had the entire street at our disposal.

The hit TV show “Desperate Housewives” aired from 2004 to 2012 and enjoyed great popularity during its run, often topping ratings charts and garnering numerous TV awards. There have been casual discussions about reviving the series among some of its stars, with Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Sollis) expressing eagerness to participate in a reboot if it were to occur, though she expressed concern that certain themes might be deemed too controversial today. Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), on the other hand, doubts that a reboot will ever take place. If given the chance to explore a particular era, the character Cherry would prefer to go back to 1966.

I’m very familiar with that street; it’s as if I’ve lived there all my life. When a commercial is filmed on that street, I recognize it immediately due to my knowledge of the houses and the layout. It was an enjoyable location to work on. Sometimes I even think about writing a version of Wisteria Lane set in 1966.

Desperate Housewives Was One of The Biggest TV Hits of Its Era

The show “Desperate Housewives” was a dark comedy blended with drama, set in the fictitious town of Fairview on Wisteria Lane. Spanning eight seasons and 180 episodes across fifteen years, it delved into the lives of a close-knit group of women, narrated from the perspective of their friend and neighbor who tragically takes her own life in the premiere episode. The story unfolded through present events, flashbacks, and flashforwards, with an extensive cast including stars like Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, Nicollette Sheridan, Dana Delany, Vanessa Williams, Brenda Strong, Ricardo Chavira, Jesse Metcalfe, James Denton, Doug Savant, and others.

The program was an unstoppable force in terms of viewership and one of the rare ones that achieved such numbers, with its initial five seasons consistently ranking among the top 10 most-watched series. It also gained widespread popularity, reaching a global audience of 120 million viewers at its peak in 2007. Throughout its eight-season span, it garnered numerous awards, including multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Reflecting on those days, I can’t help but recall the undercurrent of drama that seemed to follow our beloved show. Whispers of tension between some cast members and our leading lady, Sheridan, as well as the series’ charismatic star, Hatcher, were never far from the set. Yet, a long-running production often harbors such behind-the-scenes drama, a captivating mystery that adds to its allure.

If you decide to restart (or reboot), ensure you have a compelling artistic justification for doing so. At some stage, I will discuss the necessity of such an action with someone, asking, ‘Is there a strong enough reason for us to proceed with this?’
