As a passionate cinephile who has traveled the globe in search of the most captivating stories ever told on screen, I can wholeheartedly say that Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies is an absolute masterpiece that deserves every accolade it receives, including being India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025.
Kiran Rao’s film “Laapataa Ladies” has been chosen as India’s submission for the Oscars 2025 in the Best International Feature Film category. Prior to the 97th Academy Awards, Rao expressed her thoughts in a recent interview about the increasing global recognition of Indian films. She suggested that films which are genuine, grounded, and authentic in their origin tend to resonate strongly with international viewers.
In an interview on NDTV, Kiran Rao talked about how Indian movies, even those set in rural areas, are gaining popularity worldwide. The director believes that films which are genuine, deeply connected to their roots, and naturally produced strike a chord with global audiences because they offer a peek into another culture while tackling universal issues.
As a die-hard fan, I’d eagerly admit that despite Laapataa Ladies being immersed in the rich tapestry of Indian culture, specifically a quaint village setting, it transcends geographical boundaries by resonating with universal themes. These themes revolve around the collective aspirations of women and the yearning for societal advancement, making it remarkably relatable to an expansive audience, including myself!
Instead, a recent report from Etimes states that the cast members of Laapataa Ladies will be jetting off to the United States for a promotional tour of their film. Specifically, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav are preparing to visit the US before the Oscars 2025.
Earlier in its promotional phase, the title of the movie was adapted to “Lost Ladies” as part of the official marketing strategy. During a previous Oscars campaign, Aamir Khan traveled to New York City with his ex-wife and the film’s director, Kiran Rao, to promote his production venture.
Among 29 competing films in multiple languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam, Laapataa Ladies was chosen to represent India in the Oscars 2025 as its official entry.
The film Laapataa Ladies, jointly produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios, gained significant acclaim upon its premiere and was also celebrated at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.
In a storyline based on the fictional region of Nirmal Pradesh (modeled after Uttar Pradesh), the movie delves into the matter of vanished brides. The production showcases fresh acting talents, featuring Nitanshi, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh in significant roles. Additionally, Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, Durgesh Kumar, Geeta Agarwal, among others, take on important characters.
