Why “Movie Star” Lea Thompson Didn’t Initially Warm to Michael J. Fox Shooting Back to the Future

Why "Movie Star" Lea Thompson Didn't Initially Warm to Michael J. Fox Shooting Back to the Future

As a die-hard fan who has grown up with the timeless trilogy of “Back to the Future,” I can’t help but feel a deep sense of affection for its cast and their camaraderie that transcends time. Lea Thompson’s recent interview about her initial rocky start with Michael J. Fox during the filming of the first movie only adds another layer to the rich tapestry of the series’ history.

The cast of “Back to the Future” hasn’t produced a film together in quite some time, yet they maintain a bond akin to family. They attend conventions jointly, swap tales, and appear to reminisce about their work on the trilogy (currently available for streaming on Peacock) with sincere affection. However, as shared by Lea Thompson, this camaraderie didn’t always exist, particularly in her relationship with Michael J. Fox, at least initially.

During a chat on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, it was revealed by Thompson (the actress who portrayed Lorraine Baines McFly in the series) that she and Fox initially had a difficult time working together when filming the first “Back to the Future” movie. However, delving into the film’s history, you’ll understand why their relationship started on a challenging note.

Why Lea Thompson didn’t initially warm to Michael J. Fox while shooting Back to the Future

Despite Michael J. Fox becoming globally recognized as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, leading to his stardom, it’s crucial to recall that he wasn’t initially selected for the role. Filming had already commenced, with Thompson firmly cast as Lorraine and Eric Stoltz in the lead. However, when things didn’t quite gel, director Robert Zemeckis faced a tough choice and eventually recast Marty McFly, causing Thompson and the rest of the cast to experience a slight shock.

Later on, Thompson and Stoltz collaborated on several more movies, such as John Hughes’ “Some Kind of Wonderful,” but her friend’s passing on set left a deep wound. Additionally, there was another reason for her distaste towards Fox: at that time, he was famously recognized for his role in the sitcom “Family Ties,” whereas Thompson was known for her films. Back then, there was a significant gap between the spheres of cinema and television, and they hailed from different realms.

Thompson remarked, “It’s clearly not what it used to be, no doubt about that. Back then, I thought, ‘He’s just a television personality and I’m a film actor. I was part of Jaws 3D.’

At first, Thompson was hesitant towards Fox, but as they worked together, their mutual efforts led them to become more comfortable with each other. This growing rapport paved the way for a budding friendship.

Thompson remarked that he found him highly amusing and enjoyable to work alongside. He had previously acted with Eric, but then had to reshoot certain scenes with Michael, revealing stark differences between the two sets.

Certainly, Thompson and Fox continued their collaboration in two additional “Back to the Future” movies following this one, and they’ve maintained a friendship since then.
