Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Serves Up Huge $57.5M Wednesday, Heads for Historic $175M-Plus Launch

As a long-time Disney enthusiast who has seen my fair share of animated films, I must say that the release of Moana 2 has left me absolutely spellbound! This sequel is breaking records left and right, shattering box office expectations and cementing its place as one of Disney’s most successful animated productions.

The apocalyptic roar of Moana has stormed into the Thanksgiving cinematic market, promising a historic windfall to Tinseltown and movie house proprietors alike.

The enchanting animated musical sequel from Disney, titled “Moana 2“, had a staggering debut on Wednesday, earning $57.5 million, with an additional $13.8 million from previews. This equates to an anticipated five-day opening of over $175 million (from Wednesday through Sunday). Competitor studios predict the film will open north of $200 million – potentially reaching as high as $225 million or more. However, Disney remains tight-lipped about the final figure until Friday to avoid a repetition of last weekend’s miscalculations involving “Wicked” and “Gladiator II“.

Regardless of the circumstances, it’s predicted that Moana 2 will break several records during its premiere. For instance, it’s expected to surpass Frozen‘s five-day Thanksgiving opening record of $94 million and outperform Frozen II‘s five-day earnings of $125 million. Currently, it holds the title for the highest opening day for a Walt Disney Animation release and is the third highest animated opening day, trailing only behind Incredibles 2 and an unspecified second installation of Inside Out. To date in 2024, it ranks as the third most profitable day, following those of Deadpool & Wolverine and another sequel of Inside Out.

Among other milestones, it could become the biggest five-day opening of all time.

Initially conceived for television, the Disney animated family movie later became a cinematic sequel instead. The initial Moana (with Lin-Manuel Miranda composing original songs) had a good but not exceptional run at the box office in 2016, eventually turning into a cultural phenomenon in 2023, even becoming the most streamed film across all platforms that year. For its sequel, Moana 2, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear contributed new songs, while Christina Chen and Yvett Merino took on production roles.

The sequel, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, reunites Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as voice stars. Moana goes on a new adventure in old waters after hearing from her ancestors. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui, the demigod.)

Critics haven’t been overly generous towards Moana 2, in contrast to the original movie, but it seems that public interest remains undeterred. Interestingly, the movie’s audience rating (formerly known as the “popcornmeter”) on Rotten Tomatoes stands at a commendable 88 percent, while it received an A- CinemaScore, slightly lower than the A given to Moana. Moreover, it is drawing positive feedback on PostTrak, suggesting strong audience reactions. However, it’s worth noting that its critics score on Rotten Tomatoes currently stands at 66 percent, which is significantly lower compared to the impressive 95 percent scored by the first film.

With Disney’s Moana sequel, Universal’s Wicked, and Paramount’s Gladiator II, we anticipate that total earnings over the five days of the long Thanksgiving weekend will surpass previous records, likely exceeding $315 million.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked,” featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has been performing exceptionally well and is projected to earn approximately $97.1 million during the five-day holiday period following its opening weekend take of $112 million. The film is currently expected to surpass $240 million in domestic box office sales by Sunday’s end. This makes it one of the highest-grossing adaptations of a Broadway musical.

Under the direction of Ridley Scott, the highly anticipated sequel to “Gladiator,” titled “Gladiator II, ” is poised to earn approximately $40 million over a five-day period. The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal.

Numbers will be updated Sunday.
