Sholay director Ramesh Sippy reveals he took 23 days to shoot one iconic Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan scene; here’s why

As a seasoned cinephile and connoisseur of Indian cinema, I must say that Ramesh Sippy’s anecdotes about the creation of Sholay are nothing short of captivating. His ability to instinctively recognize the perfect moment and meticulously plan the shooting schedule to capture it is truly inspiring.

1975’s enduring cinematic gem, Sholay, continues to captivate audiences in Indian filmmaking. Recently, director Ramesh Sippy disclosed that he didn’t require Javed Akhtar’s input for alterations in the movie. He also unveiled an intriguing anecdote about a memorable scene starring Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. This iconic moment took 23 days to film, owing to the limited two-minute slot during the ‘magic hour’ when the ideal shot could be beautifully captured.

At a recent masterclass held at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, I had the privilege of learning from the esteemed filmmaker Ramesh Sippy. He offered fascinating insights into the crafting of an emotionally resonant scene starring Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. The sequence, which beautifully conveyed the deep, wordless connection between their characters, was filmed during the enchanting hour when day gives way to night – a time often referred to as ‘the magic hour’.

The director mentioned that the situation seemed intuitively appropriate, and after discussing with the cameraman, they discovered they only had about two minutes to record it flawlessly.

He mentioned that during the scene with Amitabh and Jaya, a profound silence of love was palpable because she is a widow. This particular moment struck him as particularly fitting when day transitions into night. When I conversed with the cameraman, he informed me that we could only capture footage at that enchanting hour, which left us with just two precious minutes.

Ramesh mentioned that the production team carefully scheduled the shooting of Sholay to seize the ideal moment on camera. They filmed various scenes during the mornings and early afternoons, and prepared for the special shot in the evenings. Once the golden hour came, they were all set to capture it on film.

He mentioned, “Regarding my dad, GP Sippy (the producer), he remained completely silent about my activities on set during the filming of a single scene over 23 days. He encouraged me to forge my own path in the process.

When asked about Javed Akhtar’s role in Sholay, the director clarified that while Javed was sometimes on set, he wasn’t there all the time. He highlighted that the dialogues for the film were already penned down and ready to go. Moreover, Ramesh mentioned that during visual alterations like adjusting lighting or rearranging scenes, he didn’t seek input from Javed Akhtar.

1975 saw the debut of Sholay, a film that continues to be one of the most renowned and financially successful productions in Bollywood’s storied history. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra delivered performances that have become indelible as the dynamic duo, Jai and Veeru.

The movie showcased an outstanding ensemble of actors such as Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, Jaya Bachchan, and several others in significant roles. Renowned for its compelling characters and dialogue, Sholay stands out as a notable achievement in the careers of writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Overseen by G.P. Sippy, this action-filled drama broke records as the highest-earning film in Indian cinema upon its premiere.
