As a connoisseur of crime dramas and a lover of all things mob-related, I must say that the portrayal of real-life gangsters in these movies is nothing short of captivating. Each actor brings their unique flair to the table, making these characters as memorable as the actual individuals they represent.
True crime has been all the rage in Hollywood for a lot longer than it seems. In fact, telling stories about real-life criminals goes back to the very beginnings of film. Over the years some of our favorite movies, from The Untouchables to Goodfellas and more have told the (somewhat) true events of some very famous criminals’ lives. Here is our list of some of our favorite movies about real-life mobsters and bad guys.
Al Capone – The Untouchables
In the film “The Untouchables,” Robert De Niro significantly increased his weight to portray notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone. While the movie primarily focuses on Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and his team who brought down Capone in the 1930s, De Niro’s outstanding performance left a lasting impact. His acting earned him an Oscar, and it’s no wonder that this film is often cited as one of the greatest gangster movies ever made.

Jimmy Conway – Goodfellas
Without a shadow of a doubt, the classic film “Goodfellas” deservedly holds a significant spot on our list. Nearly every character portrayed in the movie is loosely modeled after actual mobsters. Naturally, the exceptional Robert De Niro delivers another outstanding performance as Jimmy Conway, a character inspired by the real-life gangster Jimmy “The Gent” Burke.

Jimmy Hoffa – The Irishman
Without a doubt, Al Pacino excels at portraying characters associated with organized crime. Among these roles, Michael Corleone from the Godfather films holds a prominent place. Furthermore, he has taken on the depiction of real-life criminal figures, such as Jimmy Hoffa in The Irishman. Admittedly, his acting style leans towards being somewhat exaggerated, but it stands out as the finest performance in that particular movie.

Frank Lucas – American Gangster
In the 1970s, Frank Lucas, a notorious mob leader, ruled New York City’s underworld. His innovative methods significantly impacted the drug trade, particularly in Harlem. After serving time for his illegal activities, he has since earned legendary status among criminals. The exceptional Denzel Washington portrays this iconic gangster in the film “American Gangster,” considered one of the finest gangsters ever depicted on screen.

Frank Costello – The Departed
It’s easy to make fun of Jack Nicholson’s sketchy Boston accent in The Departed, but what he nails in the role is the intensity of Whitey Bulger, who his character, Frank Costello, is loosely based on. While the movie isn’t a true story, per se, many of the characters were based on real-life cops and robbers, including Costello. Like Bulger Costello is terrifying.

Lefty Ruggiero – Donnie Brasco
Lefty Ruggiero is remembered as one of the most infamous gangsters due to his actions, particularly introducing the undercover police officer Joseph D. Pistone, famously known as Donnie Brasco, into the Bonanno crime family. In the film “Donnie Brasco,” Al Pacino brilliantly portrays Ruggiero as a mobster who strives for success but always seems to encounter bad luck.

Bugsy Siegel – Bugsy
In the 1940s, notorious gangster Ben “Bugsy” Siegal significantly shaped the world we know today by constructing the first hotel on what later developed into the iconic Las Vegas Strip. This historic event was portrayed in the movie “Bugsy,” with Warren Beatty playing the lead role and depicting Siegal’s life and the development of the famous Flamingo Hotel.

John Dillinger – Public Enemies
During the Great Depression, there was widespread fascination with criminal figures such as gangsters and mobsters. John Dillinger, a notorious bank robber, was particularly popular among the public who eagerly followed his exploits. The film “Public Enemies” highlights several well-known criminals associated with Dillinger’s gangs, and Johnny Depp delivers an outstanding portrayal of Dillinger himself.

Ace Rothstein – Casino
Martin Scorsese’s movie Casino is inspired by genuine gangsters who relocated to Las Vegas during their peak power in the 1970s to manage the mob’s business ventures in the city. The character Sam “Ace” Rothstein, portrayed by Robert De Niro, is modeled after Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, a well-known bookmaker and casino executive for the East Coast crime families.

Whitey Bulger – Black Mass
Whitey Bulger, portrayed by Johnny Depp in the film “Black Mass”, is a notorious gangster figure in American history. For many years, he led the Winter Hill Gang based in Boston, but then vanished for decades after it became known that he had been an FBI informant. Depp skillfully immerses himself into this character, mirroring the intense charisma that the real-life Bulger was renowned for.

Baby Face Nelson – O Brother Where Are Thou?
George “Baby Face” Nelson was a notorious gangster during the Great Depression, known for his audacious crimes and erratic personality. In some parts of the Coen Brothers’ acclaimed film, “O Brother Where Art Thou?“, a character loosely based on Nelson is portrayed by Michael Badalucco.

Henry Hill – Goodfellas
It’s essential that Henry Hill, portrayed by Ray Liotta in the film “Goodfellas,” be included on this list. Not only is this Scorsese masterpiece one of the greatest mob movies of all time (boasting an outstanding soundtrack), but Hill gained widespread fame after the movie and numerous interviews on The Howard Stern Show, which continued until his passing in 2012.

Lucky Luciano – Mobsters
1991’s “Mobsters” was a high-profile film with a substantial budget that unfortunately did not perform well at the box office. Critics also didn’t seem to take a liking to it. However, the film did offer some striking depictions of infamous American gangsters from the early era of organized crime. Notably, Christian Slater portrayed Charles “Lucky” Luciano, one of the key figures in that history, and while the movie had its flaws, Slater’s performance was commendable.

Anthony Spilotro – Casino
Based on most reports, Anthony Spilotro, whose character inspired Joe Pesci’s portrayal of Nicky Santoro in the film Casino, was remarkably similar to how Pesci depicted him in the movie. It’s astonishing to consider given that the character appears so excessively flamboyant it seems improbable.

Tony Montana – Scarface
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I couldn’t help but add Tony Montana from the iconic film “Scarface” to our list. However, it’s important to clarify that the character isn’t a direct depiction of the real-life Scarface, Al Capone. In the movie, Tony is portrayed as a Cuban refugee, in contrast to Capone who was deeply rooted in Chicago’s criminal underworld. Yet, much like Capone and his dominion over the alcohol trade in Chicago, Tony ascends to the pinnacle of the drug trade in Miami. So, in a roundabout way, you could say they share similarities, but with distinct differences.

Frank Sheeran – The Irishman
Frank Sheeran, a notorious hitman with a reputation that spans decades, is portrayed as the central character in Netflix’s film titled “The Irishman“. Known for his work under Jimmy Hoffa, as suggested by the movie, he is believed to have carried out Hoffa’s assassination upon orders from mobster Russell Bufalino.

Nicky Barnes – American Gangster
From my gaming perspective, American Gangster paints a vivid picture of Frank Lucas’s journey in Harlem during the 70s, yet it doesn’t shy away from highlighting Nicky Barnes, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., as a significant character. In the flick, Barnes is depicted as the head honcho of “The Council” and a man who collaborated with the Italian mob families back then.

Sonny Black – Donnie Brasco
I’m a big fan of the film “Donnie Brasco,” where Michael Madsen portrays Sonny Black, a character inspired by real-life mob boss Dominick “Sonny Black” Napolitano. In the story, just like in reality, Sonny was the head of his crew, with Lefty Ruggiero (played by Al Pacino) being part of it too. However, tragically, in 1981, just as in the movie, Sonny trusted Brasco so much that he ultimately paid a heavy price when it was exposed that Brasco was actually undercover agent Joe Pistone, leading to his assassination.

Frank Nitti – The Untouchables
To set the record straight, the character Frank Nitti in the movie “The Untouchables” bears little resemblance to the actual Frank Nitti. In reality, Frank Nitti served as a ruthless enforcer for Al Capone during the 1920s and ’30s. However, the death scene portrayed in the film, where Frank Nitti is thrown off a building by Eliot Ness, is entirely fictional. In truth, the real Frank Nitti passed away many years later from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Mickey Cohen – Gangster Squad
Mickey Cohen was instrumental in establishing organized crime influence on the West Coast, especially in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He served as the initial “boss” in LA and collaborated with Bugsy Siegel in transforming Las Vegas into a city controlled by the mob during its early years. In the film “Gangster Squad“, which tells the story of the LAPD’s battle against Cohen, Sean Penn portrays him masterfully.

Thomas DeSimone – Goodfellas
Tommy DeVito, played by Joe Pesci in the film “Goodfellas,” is one of the most volatile mob characters ever depicted on screen. This character is loosely based on the real-life Thomas DeSimone, who was part of the crew that Henry Hill was connected with. Several events in the movie may have some truth to them, such as his violent killing of “Billy Batts” Bentvena and his death during a ceremony believed to be for his induction as a “made man,” as portrayed in the film.

John Patrick Looney – Road To Perdition
As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that “Road to Perdition” stands out as an exceptional film adaptation from a non-superhero graphic novel. It subtly echoes the life of Irish mobster John Patrick Looney, portraying John Rooney, brilliantly played by Paul Newman, who was a formidable figure among the northern Illinois underworld in the early 1900s.

Jimmy Hoffa – Hoffa
Prior to Al Pacino’s portrayal of union boss Jimmy Hoffa in “The Irishman”, Jack Nicholson had already taken on this iconic role in the movie “Hoffa” back in 1992. Directed by Danny DeVito, who also starred alongside him, the biographical film did not fare well at the box office. However, despite mixed reviews from critics, Nicholson’s performance managed to secure a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

Pretty Boy Floyd – Public Enemies
In Michael Mann’s 2009 film “Public Enemies,” several characters were modeled after real individuals, both criminals and law enforcement. One of these infamous outlaws not connected to John Dillinger’s gang was Pretty Boy Floyd, who had a different G-man pursuing him – Melvin Purvis, portrayed by Christian Bale in the movie. Channing Tatum was cast fittingly as Pretty Boy Floyd.

John Gotti – Gotti
One of the most ridiculed gangster movies of all time has to be Gotti. It’s hard to recommend it as something to be watched and enjoyed, we couldn’t leave it – or the performance by John Travolta as the infamous mob leader John Gotti – off this list. It’s all just so… silly.

Russell Bufalino – The Irishman
In the movie “The Irishman,” Joe Pesci portrayed Russell Bufalino, a powerful figure who headed his own family in Northeastern Pennsylvania. He had strong ties with the Five Families in New York City, and his cousin, William Bufalino, was prominently linked to Jimmy Hoffa’s legal affairs.

John Dillinger – Dillinger
There’s something truly admirable about Tom Hardy – he’s not afraid to tackle daring roles and avoid playing it too safe. In the film “Capone“, Hardy portrays the infamous Chicago mobster Al Capone. The movie focuses on the final stages of Capone’s life, after serving years in prison and losing his position as leader of the Chicago gang. It’s certainly an unusual film, but Hardy’s performance is exceptional.

Paul Vario – Goodfellas
In the iconic film “Goodfellas,” Paul Sorvino portrays the character Paul Cicero, who is modeled after real-life figure Paul Vario. Interestingly, both characters share the same first name! Vario, in reality, held the position of caporegime within the Lucchese crime family. His imprisonment was partly due to the testimony given by Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta in the movie). Sorvino’s performance as Cicero stands out among many unforgettable scenes in this classic film, where he played the calm yet powerful leader of the gang Hill was affiliated with.

Kevin Weeks – Black Mass
As a devoted film enthusiast, I must say that Jesse Plemons’ portrayal of Kevin Weeks in “Black Mass” stands out among an impressive ensemble of performances. Weeks, a ruthless associate and enforcer for the Winter Hill Gang, was right by Whitey Bulger’s side, but their paths took a surprising twist. Weeks, once a brutal henchman, eventually turned against the mob and became an informant, ultimately betraying his boss – a turn of events that carries quite an ironic resonance.

Baby Face Nelson – Public Enemies
In contrast to the portrayal of Baby Face Nelson in “O Brother Where Art Thou?”, Stephen Graham’s version in “Public Enemies” is more true-to-life as a gangster. He’s both terrifying and charming, making it an ideal role for Graham, with his performance being one of the standout aspects of the movie.

Al Capone – Capone
You really have to appreciate Tom Hardy’s choice of roles. He rarely takes the easy ones. Instead he challenges himself, like playing the aging Al Capone in Capone. The film is all about the end of Capone’s life, after he’s served his prison time and lost his spot at the top of the Chicago outfit. It’s a powerful man in completely decline mentally and physically. It’s really a fantastic performance in an uneven movie.

Billy Batts – Goodfellas
In a more natural and easy-to-read manner: William “Billy Batts” Bentvena, portrayed by the brilliant Frank Vincent, known for his exceptional portrayal of mobsters, appears in just one scene throughout the movie “Goodfellas.” Yet, that single scene where Nicky (Joe Pesci) fatally stabs him with a pen has become so iconic that it warrants his inclusion on our list.
