As a devoted “Yellowstone” enthusiast with over a decade of binge-watching western dramas under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest preview for the penultimate episode has left me both excited and skeptical. The use of the term “season finale” instead of “series finale” in the promo has ignited a flurry of speculation among fans, with many hoping for another season beyond the spinoff “The Madison.
Spoilers below for the latest episode of Yellowstone, so be warned if you haven’t yet watched.
In a different phrasing: Yet another day, another death of a Yellowstone character that leaves us heartbroken, even though the manner of Colby’s demise through a horse in the second half of Season 5 was unexpected. However, let’s not dwell on Denim Richards’ passing following the events of “Counting Coup.” Instead, I wish to discuss the sneak peek for the next-to-last episode and why it fuels speculation that Season 6 is undoubtedly one of the upcoming projects for Yellowstone.
Yellowstone Previews Keep Referring To The “Season” Finale
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the second half of Season 5, which many believed would wrap up the epic saga of the Dutton family, with Kevin Costner’s departure suggesting that the story might be drawing to a close. But then, whispers about Season 6 began circulating long before the spinoff The Madison was even confirmed and greenlit. It felt like we were on the brink of an official announcement regarding the show’s future, but it never came.
Now, fans are turning to sneak peeks of upcoming episodes as a hint that “Yellowstone” may continue after the startling demise of John Dutton, seemingly resolving this apparent dilemma. Here’s what the voiceover in the previews suggests as the scenes unfold:
Only one episode left until the season finale of Yellowstone.
The statement suggests that the season finale may not mark the conclusion of this western drama on Paramount Network, despite no official announcements about further installments beyond prequels and spinoffs from Taylor Sheridan’s team. While there has been no confirmation regarding additional content, fans have picked up on subtle hints in the promotional material, as evidenced by the various responses you can find below.
- Did I hear that right @Yellowstone? One more episode BEFORE THE SEASON FINALE? Not SERIES finale, SEASON finale! #Yellowstone #YellowstoneTV – @msAJF
- I’m sorry did they say SEASON finale???? #Yellowstone – @MIKEYOUMADETHIS
- Another phenomenal episode of @Yellowstone tonight. The preview for next week said it’s the last episode before the Season Finale. Will there be another season after all? Usually they call the last episode of the last season the Series Finale, not a Season Finale. – @countrydarts
- That was one of the best hours of television, EVER. My goodness. One question though – How in the world will they wrap all of this up in 2 episodes? I did notice that SEASON finale line instead of SERIES finale line. That didn’t go unnoticed. #Yellowstone #YellowstoneTV – @BillBernardoni
- Maybe I’m a little out of the loop but the bumper said “season finale” of #Yellowstone not “series finale” as I had been lead to believe. Did they officially announce a 6th season? – @ToddDClark
Admittedly, those posts were part of a large group of intense responses to the violence occurring throughout the series, and it’s concerning that if the next two episodes maintain the current rate of casualties, there might not be any characters left to carry on for a sixth season.

Why I’m Skeptical About Anything Seen Or Shown In Yellowstone Previews
This season appears to follow the pattern of “Grey’s Anatomy” with its episode previews, showcasing intensely dramatic scenes that, when aired, turn out to be less captivating than suggested in the trailers.
In another example, a longer sneak peek of upcoming scenes included various instances like Rip shattering a glass in the fireplace, which appeared to foreshadow thrilling incidents. However, what was shown in “Counting Coup” unveiled that Rip was gently persuaded by Beth, who suggested it as a means for him to express his feelings about Colby’s demise without holding them inside. While intriguing and informative, the events were not overly dramatic.
Instead of showing a lot of action in the Season 5B trailers, what actually occurred during that sequence was Kayce tossing Jamie onto his desk, which turned out to be their only significant physical altercation. In the end, Wes Bentley’s character managed to convince his brother that he wasn’t responsible for John’s death. The previews made it seem like Kayce confronting the man who arranged John’s demise would be much more intense and exciting, but instead, it was just a brief car ride. (Even though the scene with the military veteran holding a child at gunpoint was certainly wild, it didn’t quite match up to the level of excitement hinted in the trailers.)
Yellowstone hasn’t relied heavily on bait-and-switch tactics common in TV trailers because it developed a strong core audience organically, avoiding excessive hype. However, as the series nears its conclusion, it’s employing more surprising twists and turns to keep viewers engaged.
Although I would be equally excited and joyful as everyone else if Paramount Network officially announces Season 6 for their 2025 TV lineup, I’m not entirely convinced that the precise language used in the trailers necessarily holds any weight.
